Merge[edit]

I think United States, Chanceries of Foreign Governments should be merged into this article. There are only a handful of countries without embassies in Washington, D.C. (6 countries represented only at the United Nations in New York, Guinea-Bissau with it's embassy nearby in Rockville, Maryland, and 3 countries with no diplomatic relations - Cuba, North Korea, and Somolia). These exceptions are noted in List of Washington, D.C. embassies. The lists need to be cross-checked for accuracy — I can work on that, but if others help that's great. --Aude 01:20, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

At least for Cuba and Iran, there is an "interests section" in Washington that carries out all the functions of an embassy except actually formally having diplomatic relations. I think it would be most helpful to include that information in the exception section, rather than merely saying "no relations". OK? Also, would we want Taiwan in the exception list? I have redirected "Chanceries" to "List"; merged the addresses/missing embassies; and checked discrepancies between the two pages (Sweden, Thailand and Qatar) with the embassies themselves. DC Neighborhoods[edit]

I'm a newcomer to DC, and when I realized that the building I worked in (2233 Wisconsin) housed some embassies, I came here to check it out. I was surprised to notice that the same building is listed as being in two different neighborhoods! The location of the Burundi is listed as Glover Park and Fiji is listed as Cathedral Heights. These things generally aren't clear cut but that bldg is in Glover Park. Cathedral Hghts is a bit further north on Wisconsin Ave. I'll update the page. --dm (talk) 01:25, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New location of Georgian Embassy[edit]

It seems that very recently the embassy of Georgia has moved to 2209 Massachusetts Ave. NW, in the middle of Embassy Row. Before the move, the building appears to have housed the military attaché office of the United Arab Emirates. Could someone verify this and update the page?

Indian Embassy Wrong Building[edit]

  • As I have noted on the Indian embassy image, I believe this is the embassy annex (2536 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington D.C. 20008), and not the embassy itself (located at 2107 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington D.C. 20008). For the actual chancery, see the picture on the India embassy homepage, and the addresses of the two locations. Rationale for move[edit]

"List of Washington, D.C. embassies" is problematic for the following reasons: 1) The page contains information about other embassies and missions not in Washington, D.C. 2) The current title uses "Washington, D.C." as an adjective to modify the word "embassies", which is incorrect; the embassies list are neither embassies of Washington, D.C. nor are they embassies to Washington, D.C. They are embassies of other nations to the United States. 3) Embassies is an imprecise term. Many countries, especially those in the British Commonwealth, use the term "High Commission", and other countries do not maintain embassies at all but rather consulates and missions. "Diplomatic mission" is the generic term for embassies used in international relations. 4) The new naming convention will match nearly all other countries including the UK, Germany, France, Canada, Mexico, etc. epicAdam (talk) 01:15, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand why you replaced the article with one with vastly less content. The new version didn't even contain links to the articles we have on most of the embassies. Well, for one. That list is vastly wrong. Just running down a few of those I know that a number of those embassies are no longer located at the addresses provided (e.g. The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is located on M Street, not New Hampshire Avenue). There are other sites that do a much better job at keeping a list of the embassies and their addresses. And for the record, I did keep the individual embassy pages (they were originally inserted as references) but I have since listed them alongside the country names. Lists are only good if they're properly maintained, which this one obviously wasn't and I'd rather provide people with less information than incorrect information. And just FYI, there are 172 embassies... Libya reopened their embassy on Virginia Ave (http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/dpl/winter2008/101872.htm). epicAdam (talk) 14:31, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing out those errors, I've updated them. Since you seem to know a great deal about DC embassies, perhaps you would consider keeping the page up to date? I do think that specific address information isn't very useful and changes too rapidly. Of the various embassy lists, my favourite is List of diplomatic missions in Russia. The photos add a lot to the page and it is much clearer that the page is an index to our articles on the specific embassies. Keeping red links to those embassies that don't currently have pages is also important. - SimonP (talk)
Yes, I understand the point of keeping it as a link page. Makes complete sense. I only question using the addresses of the embassies as the links... It just looks unkempt and the addresses are near-impossible to keep updated continuously. The only way to check for errors would be to run through the State Department list and hope that they have their information updated. The building on New Hampshire Ave that used to house embassy of the dem rep of the congo has been abandoned for years yet the state dept just got around to updating their list over the winter. And oh yes, they still have "Serbia and Montenegro" even though Montenegro has its own embassy now... :-/ However, if we wanted to keep the addresses, perhaps another solution could be to link the embassy pages to the country name? Since the other article links the country names, they don't necessarily have to be duplicated and then this article could become truly a link list (and we won't have glaring red postal addresses running all the way down the page). And yes, the Russian list is great. I like the lighter grayscale. I wish I could list all the diplomatic missions in the United States... I tried last night but it just looked awful and was almost entirely useless; there are just too many foreign missions in the U.S. Let me know what you think. I agree that dumping the addresses and linking the articles from the country name is a good idea. What I most want to preserve are the photos. One of my main interests in embassies is architectural. Embassies tend to be interesting new buildings or well preserved heritage structures and a visual guide adds a lot to these pages. - SimonP (talk) 16:03, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Well I can proceed with the address dumpage. Do we want to get rid of the addresses altogether or just delink them? I was thinking about dumping them, but I kind of think the neighborhood information is neat. Although, if the rationale behind dumping the addresses is that they're too hard to maintain, then the neighborhood information should be dumped as well, right? We can leave the information there, I guess. Just shorten it, to leave just the street address (no suite numbers, city or zip code info). A big problem is also all the suite numbers and the zip codes... they change a lot. The zip codes especially because they don't necessarily reflect the zip code the building is in, but rather a unique identifier zip code that the state department uses (it's ridiculously complicated). Hi people, I am the editor who reformatted and expanded Diplomatic missions in Russia to the article as it stands now. If I may give a little advice in regards to your article. I would modify it somewhat to match the Russian list in terms of formatting. E.g. The country name wikilink should remain as a link to the actual country article. The address column should probably go, this is directory type information, and probably doesn't belong on WP; however, the address could be inserted on individual articles. Keep the neighbourhood column as it. Where the address column now sits, change this to 'mission type', insert Embassy where possible, and wikilink the word embassy to the individual mission article; this column is useful as it also allows for the addition of other diplomatic missions such as that from the European Commission, etc. The existence of ambassadors in these lists, is something that is gonna have to be discussed; how do editors on this article feel about that column? --Россавиа Диалог 17:41, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C.[edit]

I had my own list of people and organizations in Washington D.C. But, that was a long time ago. Question: What is the purpose of this list? Comment: A list should serve some purpose, like being a mailing list where people can find street addresses, e-mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers. Does anyone know of such lists for Washington D.C.? It's nice to have everything on one page, rather than to look up each individual country by themselves. Too time consuming!
