List of disparaging place names → ? – Continuing discussion from my talk page, let's hash out a good title for this list. I don't like the current "List of disparaging place names" because it doesn't make clear the scope: this is just a list of nicknames, not actual place names which may be considered disparaging, like Hell, Michigan or Fucking, Austria. My preferred title was List of disparaging city nicknames, going off of the List of city nicknames redirect. But List of pejorative city nicknames would work just as well. Si Trew wanted to avoid "city" for WP:ENGVAR reasons. I could probably argue for WP:RETAIN here, but I think the more salient point is that it's common practice on Wikipedia to use "city" as a shorthand for "populated place", "settlement", etc. We could go for "cities and towns" or "populated places" or something, but I'd rather be WP:CONCISE. List of disparaging place nicknames seems to suggest itself, but it sounds awkward to me. --BDD (talk) 17:17, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think like BDD I am casting around for good names to call it. BDD made a brilliant draft and RS and I moved it, but I think we are both wondering what title we put it at. BDD and I, I think, disagree, about the "city" bit. I think that applies mostly to US place names, for example most in the UK are not cities, but the trouble is just trying to find a good title that would not be confusing to someone from outside the US.
So I suggested various, and I can see why BDD want "city" kept and I don't. But it really is hard to find a decent place to put it. List of pejerotive place names is no better, btw I added Silkingrad which existed as an R already to Stevenage, my home town, but it is very hard to know where to put this. I am just keeping trying to dole out suggestions until one makes sense, so it is pretty much a bingo call really, to get consensus. BDD did a brilliant job with the draft that I moved to mainspace, well referenced and so on, so I don't think that is in doubt, just where to put it in mainspace. As a technicality I asked and got CSDs for a couple of my badly done moves into WP space and so on, which were entirely my cock-ups and not BDD's. Because of those errors on my part I didn't dare request another move, so thanks to BDD for doing so.
I'll throw out some others just at random in case any catches: Pejorative city names (not "list of"), Pejorative place names, Self-deprecating place names. For myself I think the last is better, and BDD did suggest that at one point, that "Self-deprecating place names" seems to fit the bill. "Bradley Stoke" is not referenced in the art but here is one:
  • "'Sadly Broke' celebrates 20 years". BBC News. 3 January 2007. Retrieved 25 January 2015. A town once nick-named Sadly Broke, because of its reputation as a soulless housing estate with homes in negative equity, has reached its 20th birthday.
I'll add that to the art but I know BDD and I are both in good faith and we won't do so until we have consensus. Actually I might be bold and do that, but BDD did all the hard work at the art, and I shouldn't stick my oar in. Si Trew (talk) 19:56, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
okay, I was bold and added the ref at the art. I Propose that the article be moved to Self-deprecating place names. Once done the {{tlx|R from alternative capitalization]] and {{R from other punctuation}} will follow once we have consensus i.e. everyone agreeing with me :) . Si Trew (talk) 20:07, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so; not all of these names are necessarily self-deprecating. Some are genuinely hostile and/or from outside. --BDD (talk) 04:37, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support a move to something with "disparaging" (preferred) or "pejorative". Oppose a move to something with "self-deprecating" because, as User:BDD notes above, not all are such. —  AjaxSmack  04:24, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to List of disparaging nicknames for settlements - I toyed with the idea of agreeing with the "city" idea, but I don't really like it. I don't think it's even a question of WP:ENGVAR, because city simply has different meanings in different jurisdictions. In UK English we would still call Overland Park, Kansas a "city" because that's how the US defines it. Similarly, I doubt Americans would call Nuneaton a city, because in English terms it isn't one. And Bradley Stoke probably wouldn't even be a city by US standards, it's more like an area of another city. I like the word settlement best, because it's unambiguous.  — Amakuru (talk) 16:33, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
