Former equipment[edit]

What should be done with information regarding equipment that's phased out/no longer in use? Should it be simply removed or kept with a corresponding note? - Neptuunium (talk) 18:50, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Estonian1885: ESTSOF's equiptment should be re-added, see the articles regarding equipment of other national armies. - Neptuunium (talk) 11:18, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit torn on that part. On the one hand, yeah, it would consolidate all the equipment in one place. On the other hand, ESTSOF is a separate branch from the Land Forces and already has its own table. If anything, maybe I'd add a reference to their article.--Estonian1885 (talk) 11:56, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Feels like it could be solved with renaming the article to "Military equipment of Estonia". - Neptuunium (talk) 08:51, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. That is also one option. We could also include equipment from other branches like the Navy and Air Force. The Navy especially has a rather short and pointless page for its ships. --Estonian1885 (talk) 10:41, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of equipment of the Estonian Land ForcesMilitary equipment of Estonia – Better, more inclusive title that allows for a wider scope and follows the 'title formula' used by other similar articles (e.g. Military equipment of Finland, Military equipment of Sweden etc). I would actually suggest renaming the article to "List of equipment of the Estonian Defence Forces". Such a format for the title is much more common in these lists (28 in total). Also, there is already an article named List of equipment of the Estonian Defence League for the voluntary military organisation.--Estonian1885 (talk) 15:50, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Neptuunium: Do we have an agreement on this isse? I am in favour of a general name change, but would prefer "List of equipment of the Estonian Defence Forces" because it is more common.--Estonian1885 (talk) 08:58, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I still feel that military "Military equipment of Estonia" would be better, because the list could then also include the eqipment of the Defence League. However , "List of equipment of the Estonian Defence Forces" is still better than the current title. - Neptuunium (talk) 12:10, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Neptuunium: I would prefer to keep Defence League and Defence Forces separate because they are completely separate organizations. If we gave the list such a generic title, we should technically also include police equipment etc because they also operate various items (like armoured vehicles) that could be considered military equipment, which I personally think is overkill. It would make the list a bit too convoluted.--Estonian1885 (talk) 10:51, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, "List of equipment of the Estonian Defence Forces" is fine by me. - Neptuunium (talk) 11:56, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Local or common naming of equipment[edit]

I noticed that the article uses common commercial nomenclature for the equipment, even though Estonia has its own naming system. In comparison, the articles regarding Finnish and Swedish equipment, List of equipment of the Finnish Army and List of equipment of the Swedish Army have their own names for the equipment. While it appears that the Estonian names aren't shortened like the Finnish and Swedish names are (eg. Sako TRG-42 is 8.6 TKIV 2000 in Finnish and Psg 08 in Swedish the short forms), I think it would be more informative to have the Estonian names for them, and then the commercial names in the Notes/Details part. I would like to hear other opinions on this, before making such a change, though. --XoravaX (talk) 06:47, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should be other way round: use the name matching the title of the WP article about that equipment (which is generally the manufacturer's name) and mention the local name/designation in the "variant" or "notes" section. IMO, articles on Swedish equipment follow a poor practice. It should be BGM-71 TOW rather than "Robot 55", MIM-104 Patriot rather than "Lvsystem 103", etc. I believe this follows the general spirit of the naming conventions in Wikipedia, see the naturalness point in WP:TITLE, recognizability and common use in English sources points in WP:OFFICIALNAMES, readers over editors point in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (military vehicles), etc. However, I am not aware of any consensus or explict policy on this. --Mindaur (talk) 11:03, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on this point. It is much better to go with the main article name than to start bringing out all individual nomenclatures. Also less confusion because the names are more recognizable, requires less effort in editing and is more consistent. --Estonian1885 (talk) 16:13, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
