Check links[edit]

The links in the article need to be rechecked. For instance, a random check showed that the following do not link to the correct biography:

O big mistake. I didn't check it. The linking were done by people who edited the article before me (IPs'). I'll open all the articles and check it and create necessary ones. Thanks, KensplanetTC
Great! I'll help too.
Note that sometimes an article for the governor already exists under a different name, so it is a good idea to google for the name to check for a pre-existing wikipedia articles. For example the the article for the Governor Robert Abercromby is at Robert Abercromby of Airthrey. Abecedare (talk) 21:29, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, checked all and removed all false linking. KensplanetTC 07:33, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyediting questions[edit]

I was asked to copyedit this list. There are some sentences that I could not clarify because I was unsure of the original intent behind them:

  • They had an executive council of two members of the Indian Civil Service for 12 years standing, appointed by the Crown. - I'm not sure what the relationship is between this executive council and the rest of the government. Could this be explained a bit more clearly?
  • After the headquarters of the Company shifted from Surat to Bombay in 1687[8] and subsequent expansions into the city, the post of the governor became more important with more territory to govern. - What is expanding? I don't understand.
    • The Bombay Presidency is expanding. Initially, the Presidency included only 1 district Bombay City. It continued expanding and by the early 20th century, it included 26 districts.
  • Subsequently the territory kept on expanding and became the Bombay Presidency, which included four commissionerships with 26 districts. - How did the territory expand?
    • That's a 250 year story. This Page is out of scope.
  • Raja Maharaj Singh was the first Indian governor of Bombay after Independence while the last governor was Sri Prakasa. - This is confusing.
    • Broke the sentence into two for more clarity.
  • except for occasional visits, and during three years (1672–75) of Governor Aungier's rule, the Governors of Bombay spent almost the whole of their time in Surat, of which factory they were Presidents - "factory"? Is this the right word?
    • Yes, it is the right word. It was known as Surat factory.
  • The four commissionerships included the northern province Gujarat, the central province Deccan, the southern province Carnatic, and the northwestern province Sind after 1843 (separated from Bombay Presidency in 1936). - I'm not sure what the "after 1843" part of the sentence is describing.
    • It says that the Sind province was included in Bombay Presidency after 1843.
  • Personally, I think more information could be added about the location of Bombay and its history. It would help readers unfamiliar with Indian history contextualize the list.
    • I'll work on this.

I hope this was helpful. Awadewit (talk) 01:29, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've addressed some of the concerns in the first paragraph of the lead. The next two need to be copyedited as they do not flow both chronologically and in ideas. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:38, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure how to add to this page on list of Governors of Bombay Presidency but I know that Sir Charles Warre Malet was Acting Governor for some time before Mr.Duncan arrived in 1798 so that is an inaccuracy and there are probably others (NT).

Suggestions[edit]

I just finished re-reviewing the article and wanted to note a couple of suggestions here for consideration by Kensplanet and other editors:

  • I think the map File:Bombay Presidency (20th century).png should be removed from the article for now, since a regular reader may not realize that it is inaccurate (as stated on its description page).
  • The Post Independence section needs an additional senetence or so outlining the appointment and power of the Governor. Something like, "Post-independence, the Governor of Bombay State was appointed by the President of India for a 5 year term. He served as the nominal head of the state, with executive power mainly exercised by the Chief minister of the state". (I don't want to add it myself, without proper reference.)

Rest looks good! I'll add my review comments to the FLC. Abecedare (talk) 23:37, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Can someone check the use of the title "Chief Minister" given to Bal Gangadhar Kher in 1937? The Government of India Act of 1935 has no such title for the provincial legislatures, which have a Governor and Ministers. Ash (talk) 01:55, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shift contents to Bombay Presidency[edit]

This article should consist of lists of governors only. Most of the history and other introductions to the lists should be in the Bombay Presidency article. I haven't made these changes since this is a featured article. --Salilb (talk) 12:55, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
