I see this as well. The values in the table are very different that other data that has been found. See, for example, the area of New York City. This source may not be accurate or the other source(s) might not be. For this article's list to be worthwhile, the data must be accurate — reliable sources must be validated. — ERcheck (talk) 03:06, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

General comment[edit]

The criteria for inclusion on this list seem unclear. The top entries are for incorporated local government areas, often with quite low populations, while many later entries (e.g., Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne) are for metropolitan areas. In those three cases, the incorporated LGAs are much smaller than the metro area, and probably would not qualify for inclusion. Agreed. For instance, on Tokyo, I have no clue where its stats was cited from. The Tokyo Metropolitan office offers says all area of the Tokyo prefecture is 2,193.96km^2 including Izu and Bonin Islands, islands on the Pacific Ocean[1]. So-called Tokyo 23 Wards (which may be what you imagine as the City of Tokyo) is 627.57 km^2 by area.--Aphaia (talk) 04:03, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New York?[edit]

New York City has a land area of about 8600 sq. km (3320 sq. mi.) and is not on this list -- but cities with smaller land areas are on the list (Jumeau; Pune; Shanghai; etc.). They're municipalities, apparently. The word municipality of course has different meanings in different countries (they're the equal of the other provinces in China, for example), and not all of them would be the equivalent of cities. This list probably needs tighter criteria, anyway. What exactly are we measuring, and why? Just the area of units of local governments that call themselves 'cities' (in the local language)? What about the urban areas? That would be a more relevant comparison. Lumping all different units of local government together into one list as if they're more or less municipal seems a bit like comparing apples and oranges. - ҉ Randwicked ҉ 15:26, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And some Australian cities have reappeared here, despite the fact it seems to be comparing the metropolitan areas of these cities with the cities proper of some other places on the list, and who knows what of some others. I propose this list should reflect URBANISED AREA size from a single reliable source (perhaps Demographia), or area of the CITY PROPER if a single reliable source can be found, or else this article should be deleted. locality selection above 20k[edit]

If we're going to have an urban areas section it needs sourcing, preferably a single source[edit]

I'm going to delete it for now. It's pretty useless having just five Australian cities and Chicago. And as I pointed out in my edit, the Australian area figures have nothing to do with any definition of urban area or city proper. I don't know about the Chicago figure. Demographia is the only source I know of on the internet that produces relatively comparable figures for urban areas around the world, but it has its own issues as a source (being a pro-sprawl lobby group for one). ҉ Randwicked ҉ 11:59, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
