The nature of the page requires that it be a plug for projects whose level of organization may vary from utterly free to commercial-for-some-purposes. They may include good or bad attitudes, and the fact that it's a big list of projects may lure people to sneak in their own, rather off-topic, cheap plugs for things that aren't this type of item. That last type of thing would count as page vandalism more specifically, but someone must have decided the spam boilerplate was handiest. That boiler basically begs someone in the applicable community to keep an active eye on this page .... which to me, sounds like a very good thing to encourage. Mandriva?[edit]

I have a copy of Mandriva Powerpack 2007 on my flash drive downloaded from pendrive linux and it boots live off of the flash drive, so I think you should add mandriva based to the list of live distrobutions. This description is too generic[edit]

This is a list of Live Distros, which is a generic term for an operating system distribution that is executed upon boot, without installation on a hard drive.

The description of a live distro as an operating system which runs from something other than a hard drive successfully describes every operating system in existence. This should be rethought and fixed. How about a list of live CD/DVDs, and a different list for live USBs? These two lists would over the entire live ecosystem, and successfully separate the two live camps. --NicholasBrand (talk) 09:01, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This page lists only Live CDs and should have that reflected in the title.

  • Oppose per same reasons. Moreover, I don't really think that we should separate the list into 2 distinct articles.   • As on the live cd page, the terms "live CD" and "live DVD" can be used interchangeably. The terms "live CD" and "live usb" are also clearly defined in Wikipedia as separate. Mac OSX vs Mac OS[edit]

Problem: "System Folder of Mac OS on a CD or on a floppy disk" is listed alongside OSx86 and BootCD from Charlessoft for Mac OS X Mac OS is a very different Operating System than OS X, and in fact there is a good technical argument to list OSX under "BSD-derived." or even "NeXT derived" From a commercial and perhaps "laymen's" standpoint, BootCD and OSx86 are both for Macintosh labelled systems from Apple etc, etc. So, for accuracy's sake, I am separating out Mac OS. For clarity's sake I will create a Mac OS X section, so the "average" reader can identify these distributions with the Apple Macintosh computer line. New Entries Not Found in Wikipedia[edit]

A recent new addition to the list was reverted and removed with the reason citing the lack of a Wikipedia article associated with it. Should this be a prerequisite for entries on the list? I don't think so. There may be other reasons the entry is questionable, but a presence elsewhere on Wikipedia as a reason to exclude entries is too insular. The number one policy in Wikipedia, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not says:

Wikipedia encompasses many lists of links to articles within Wikipedia that are used for internal organization or to describe a notable subject. In that sense, Wikipedia functions as an index or directory of its own content. However, Wikipedia is not a directory of everything in the universe that exists or has existed. [...]

So, yes, your subject must be notable.
Another thing: In accordance to Wikipedia:Editing policy § Talking and editing anyone is allowed to revert your contribution with a good reason and you are expected not to reinstate it without a discussion in talk page. You have reinstated your contents twice so far. This is called edit warring and is the ground for the removal of the editing rights. You should resort to dispute resolution instead.
Last thing: I am very shocked to see you use the word "insular" so easily. In Wikipedia we revert each other all the times and yet we love each other. If you take insult so easily, then maybe editing Wikipedia isn't something you should be doing. If anything, it is I who should take insult because you lied once and wrote "See Talk" while there was nothing here.

Thank you for responding in Talk, although I'm not feeling the love when I'm called a liar or my right to participate is questioned. I was making this entry in Talk when you checked earlier - I should have saved the entry first, before reverting your deletion. But to call me a liar is not justifiable.

The principle in Wikipedia is collaboration, not deletion of contributions without explanation, or based on rules the editor has presumed from his or her own logic.

@Oogbus and Codename Lisa: Alright, heads up both of you! AOMEI is a startup Chinese company that has been systematically advertising itself on Wikipedia. There has been a concentrated attempt in List of disk cloning software, List of disk partitioning software, BootCD, List of tools to create Live USB systems, Comparison of file synchronization software and this article. We need a Live USBs list[edit]

Nowadays, live CDs are rare; live USBs are much popular (more space, and unlike CDs, you can also write on the drive). Besides, the current Live CDs list actually has distros that only use live USBs. I agree that live USBs are common enough that Wikipedia should mention them, so I'm starting a list of live USB distributions as a section of this article.
It doesn't exactly match the current title of this article, so we may later WP:SPLITOUT that section into some other article (perhaps "list of live USBs").
However, there seems to be a third category of operating systems designed to be booted from one read-only device (CD or "locked" SD card in a USB adapter) and updates to the OS and applications are written to a USB flash stick (via some file system overlay).
Where should those OSes be listed?
