Removed statement[edit]

The statement "The unit of population is 10,000 people." seems inconsistent with the numbers in the table. It would imply that the Greater Tokyo area, with a population of 34,940,000 units, has 349,400,000,000 people. I'll take the sentence out. Fg2 11:42, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need more help with stats[edit]

Any help with updating the table is appreciated. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:11, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

list needs official sources[edit]

None of the listed sources are reliable sources and some are Wikipedia mirrors. The Japanese government does not even define some of the listed areas as metropolitan areas. As a start, the Japan Statistics Bureau data only should be used. An alternative source might be the metropolitan employment area data by the University of Tokyo. --Polaron | Talk 20:18, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will make major changes to the list to include two tables: one using the 1.5% commuting criterion used by the Statistics Bureau, and a another using the U-Tokyo MEA delineation. The changes will happen on and off in the next day or so. --Polaron | Talk 22:55, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia Britannica is not a reliable source? And specifically which are Wikipedia mirrors? Mongobay isn't, and neither is the City Mayor Statistics. Those are all the sources currently being used. If you know of others, please add them. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:40, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The population statistics do not match the sources. The Britannica articles do not include any regional population statistics and the others are not reliable sources for population data. In any case, I'll be doing a massive overhaul of this list to use the two sources I mentioned above. --Polaron | Talk 01:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What are the links? ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:11, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For the Statistics Bureau data see here. Definitions can be found here. For the Univ. of Tokyo study see here. --Polaron | Talk 03:29, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of metropolitan areas in Japan by populationList of metropolitan areas in Japanconcision 68.151.25.115 (talk) 14:22, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - No argument provided for move. This article is specifically a list of areas by population, not just a list of areas. The current title clearly identifies the article topic so it seems best here. --AussieLegend () 19:12, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
for concision's sake, the argument was concision. list of metropolitan areas in Japan redirects here and list of metropolitan areas in Japan by area doesnt exist68.151.25.115 (talk) 19:36, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that there is a redirect doesn't mean the two things are the same. This article has existed since 2002. The redirect was created in November 2015 for unknown reasons. --AussieLegend () 20:59, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
so just make articles because the title is always correct! someone, mark WP:RM {{historical}} now!68.151.25.115 (talk) 06:12, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
...maybe list of metropolitan areas in Japan by area is a notable topic?68.151.25.115 (talk) 20:50, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What relevance does that have to the diiscussion? It's a totally separate topic. --AussieLegend () 20:59, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
see my response above68.151.25.115 (talk) 06:12, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Your response makes no sense. You still haven't given a valid reason for moving the article. The current title is 100% accurate, concise, and clear for what it contains. There is no valid reason to move it. Now, stop harassing me unless you've got something worthwhile to say. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:23, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The original IP has still not given a valid reason to move the article, However, BarrelProof has. Based on that argument, I can support the move. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:05, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: The proposal is more concise than the current title and is still adequate to identify the topic of the article. This list is apparently the only list of metropolitan areas in Japan on Wikipedia. Readers can learn about the how the list is arranged by reading the opening paragraph of the article, and population is a very natural order to follow, so readers may expect the list to be in that order already without making that part of the title. —BarrelProof (talk) 17:04, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • SUpport per BarrelProof. Unlike the parallel move request at Talk:List of metropolitan areas by population, this list really does aim to give *all* the Japanese metro areas, and it is the only article attempting to do that. Therefore the proposed title is both more concise, and remains accurate.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:21, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support and make the tables sortable by any column. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 05:54, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
