Problem with "Populated Place" column[edit]

The description for Populated Place says the location may be incorporated or census designated, but the description for a Populated Place on the GNIS website - where this data originates - says quite the opposite: "A populated place that is not a census designated or incorporated place" ... In my opinion, this column should be removed, as these location names are quite arbitrary and might refer to a road, crossroad, or location unrelated to population. 2601:196:200:5ECC:D530:6324:B740:7ECC (talk) 22:45, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The description in the article says "unincorporated", not "incorporated", so it does in fact agree with the GNIS description. All the place names appear on federal topo maps. --Ken Gallager (talk) 12:49, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The wrong populations for Portsmouth and Hampton were on this page from 2012 to 2021. The 2020 census populations are now on this page.

You are right that this article had the wrong populations. Shortly after the 2010 census, the Census Bureau issued revised numbers for Portsmouth and Hampton, which were correctly placed in their respective articles but not in this one. The error was the result of counting some armed forces (Navy? or Coast Guard?) in Hampton rather than on their boat docked at Portsmouth; hence the revisions. At any rate, those numbers are now moot. By the way, the best place to go for the correct 2020 numbers is the Census Bureau website itself. --Ken Gallager (talk) 13:42, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
