Musical Comedians vs. Comedic Musicians/Singers

I do not need a response for myself and will likely not think to check back (any time soon); but I think that this is a worthwhile clarification for the continuing life of the list, especially since it is listed as "High Importance". So I'm starting the talk on this topic for those who feel some degree of ownership.

I very much like the disclaimer at the top, "This is an incomplete list that may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness. You can help by expanding it with entries that are reliably sourced." Fair enough, we agree that we can't get perfect consensus.

After starting it, I realize that the following is stated in very subjective terms (*I*); I suppose the question is how common this view is, and whether the group here wants to set this list up one way or another or another other :) . ... When I think of "comedians", I guess I think of stand-up comedy, sketch comedy, and the like. I don't think of Weird Al, or The Arrogant Worms, as comedians -- even though they are inarguably funny acts, and intentionally so! I think of them as funny musical acts, with that being a separate category from how we use the word "comedian" in every-day speech. If someone asks me if I want to go see a comedy show, I don't think of acts like theirs unless the person asking me is more specific. It wouldn't have occurred to me to add their likes to this list.

As I typed the preceding, I realized that I think of Stephen Lynch as a musical comedian, though most of his show is music. That introduces a very real question, then: What's the difference? I think that a small part of it might be that he was introduced to me as a comedian; and I can't recall for certain. His songs tend to make fun of stuff in much the way stand-up comedians do, and the same kinds of stuff. Weird Al and The Arrogant Worms are totally billed as musical acts, selling albums in the same places as other strictly musical acts, with performances being called "concerts" rather than "shows". I'd think of Stephen Lynch's performances as shows (even started to type "*shows* as shows" [emphasis added] before I caught myself and went back to the more neutral "performances as shows"). Does he do more talking between and around his musical numbers than the others? It's been a while for me. ... So I think that's at least my preliminary answer to my own question. If the performers were asked if they consider themselves one or the other, is their own answer relevant?

So that's why addressing the difference between "Musical Comedians and Comedic Musicians/Singers" seems important to me, as long as you all come up with a response that you all can use and live with.

ACTUAL QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER: 1) Do you actually want both, in the same list without distinction, or do you instead want only "Musical Comedians" -- however you define that? 2) If you want both in the same list, do you want them separated into two sub-lists?

Leaving you to your discussion now. Again, I'm not likely to be around to contribute more or answer questions, but I don't think I'm important here, beyond pointing out the questions so that others know they've been asked and answered.
