What are the criteria for categorizing the file formats?[edit]

As they are now it is unintuitive:

why are text file formats listed under "Multimedia"?
why are YAML, JSON, XML are categorized as "Other" as not as text?

"Open" vs. "Free"[edit]

The distinction between "open" and "free" is not clear on this page.

When editing the info box one might see:

"| free = Yes"

But as displayed to the page's visitors it shows as:

"Open format? Yes"

"Free" and "Open" are not synonymous.

- "Open" formats are free TO USE without encumbrance. - "Free" should simply refer to whether or not the publisher charges for the document.

This arises (for me) because PDF 2.0 is not "free" (ISO charges for it), but it is most certainly an "Open" standard, as there are no restrictions on its use and no proprietary information is required in order to use it.

RECOMMEND: Disambiguate "free" and "open" in Wikipedia info-boxes. A document can be both "Open" and "not free" at the same time. Duff Johnson (talk) 15:50, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JPEG[edit]

Suggestion to add Parchive[edit]

This page should add the Parchive file format. It's extensions are ".par" and, for version 2, ".par2". I designed version 2 and, as a self-interested party, cannot add it to the page.
