Disputed[edit]

Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Ulrike Meinhof, Holger Meins, and Jan Raspe- disputed, many argue they were assasinated by the state, effectively capital punishment. Some german federal counties threatened to secede whent the central government refused to properly investigate these death. Years ago an ex-german secret service agent disclosed they were in fact assasinated. I think Germany owes an official apology and fiscal compensation to their relatives.

Very poorly populated list[edit]

I think this list is very poorly populated. Since I see this article had been nominated for deletion and subsequently kept, I will not nominate it, but I think it should be deleted anyway. The categories Category:People who died in prison custody and Category:People who died in police custody together give a MUCH more comprehensive overview of the topic in question... wjmt (talk) 21:51, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria[edit]

No one has responded to my question at the AfD, so I'll repeat it here:

  • Comment What are the inclusion criteria for this list? The lede makes it seem that it should only include people who already were famous for other stuff and happened to have died in prison. So would it exclude individuals who are famous for having died in prison? (I'm thinking of people like Zhang Bin and Sun Zhigang, whose deaths in re-education through labor and custody and repatriation facilities, respectively, brought a lot of international attention to the Chinese prison system.)

If there is no answer within a day or two, I will probably just BOLDly rewrite the lede and redefine the article, which people might not like, so I hope I get a response... Politizer talk/contribs 00:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about a list of criteria? Along the lines of "If the subject meets 3 out of 5 on the checklist, then they qualify".
  • Do they have their own Wikipedia article?
  • Did their demise get reported in international media?
  • and so on...
--JeffJ (talk) 06:11, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with those criteria, but presenting them that way makes it seem too policy-like to welcome editors to the page....once we decide on what this page should be, we ought to be able to word it pretty clearly in the lead-in. (for example, the current introductory sentence is basically a prose way of saying your first suggested criterion; to include the second—which, for the record, I think should be included—we could maybe make it something like "this is a list of notable individuals who have died in prison, and individuals whose deaths in prison caused a significant international response" or something like that...just hopefully better-worded than that, I'm a bit tired now.) Politizer talk/contribs 06:15, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're on the right track. --JeffJ (talk) 04:00, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also think we need to look more at expanding the scope of the article. Police custody, reform schools, etc. List of notable deaths in detention facilities? That could include military, police, immigration... or would that be too unwieldy a list? And, as I think about it, Lee Harvey Oswald died in police custody, but actually within a facility... List of notable detainee deaths? --JeffJ (talk) 05:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think that would be a good move. The two individuals I mentioned in my first comment above also died in detainment facilities rather than prisons, technically. List of notable deaths in detention facilities seems good to me (it's a little clunky, but I doubt there's any better way to word it). Politizer talk/contribs 05:18, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Add to the list[edit]

These individuals should be added to the article. Thanks. (64.252.34.115 (talk) 01:14, 20 August 2010 (UTC))[reply]

I suggest adding Edward Muscare, former TV host and YouTube celebrity. He died in prison of lung cancer on January 8, 2012. He was incarcerated when he became famous on YouTube and was thus caught being online, for that was a violation of his probation as a former sexual offender; even though computer use had nothing to do with his original conviction.

Suggestions for this list

  • Leonardo Conti
  • Robert Ley

Leonardo Conti and Robert Ley both committed suicide, whilstn awaiting trial at the Nuremburg trial 1945-46. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pookleberry (talkcontribs) 12:54, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe rethink this article?[edit]

I know that its been up for AFD twice, but it's such an odd COATRACK of a list. Perhaps if it was divided up into a list of notable people who died while imprisoned, and a separate list of prisoners killed by other prisoners?E.M.Gregory (talk) 00:39, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I recommended this list be split into the following two list of prison suicides, list of prisoners murdered whilst serving their sentences and one for prison staffs, this will kill off any possibility of an indiscriminate list of that including people serving life sentences.
The moral of this list, prisons is bad for your health. Donnie Park (talk) 14:14, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Location?[edit]

Shouldn't it say where they died?--Jack Upland (talk) 02:09, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List is suspiciously SHORT and untrue[edit]

Many people in prison have been killed by prison guards or

Jeffrey Dalmer is a famous one (can't not be in the list - but isn't in the list). He was verified to have been killed by a prison guard, if i remember correctly.

The list of "global deaths" is too short to be true.

In fact, in Virginia 2010, 50% of all white males with long sentences died a non-natural death (up 100% from a decade ago).

parlay that into every state in usa, every state in of 2000 countries globally: and we see this list is SIMPLY REDICULOUS, laughably incorrect

it's incorrect because it mis-represents the famous people who died non-naturally in prison

it's incorrect because it "trusts" the warden's official statements not even mentioning of there were proven suspicions the warden was LYING. many wardens have been caught in lies as to prison death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:143:400:547B:CD83:879D:9710:3B66 (talk) 18:13, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please add these two ...[edit]

Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris. Both died in prison. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:52, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
