Alphabetical list[edit]

If somebody wants to convert this into an alphabetical list, is more than welcome, but please put it on List of console role-playing games rather than replacing this one. xDCDx 12:54, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Limit?[edit]

How obscure/well known should a game be in order to qualify for being listed here?

  • There shouldn't be a limit. If it has been released for console it belongs in the list. (Djungelurban 14:47, 22 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]
  • There's a fairly long list of console RPGs (as of 1999) here, and a similar list here although it needs to be checked for errors. (Buuneko 00:25, 29 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Hanjuku Hero[edit]

I changed "Hanjuku Eiyuu" for "Hanjuku Hero", as the 英雄 kanji aren't read "eiyuu" (meaning hero) but actually like the English word "hero". There are small characters (furigana) over the kanji that hint you to read them this way, but these are lost in transliterations.

Check the page at amazon.co.jp for "半熟英雄(はんじゅくヒーロー)", the game title in kanji with the reading hints in brackets: http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00014ATUG — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karawapo (talkcontribs) 03:03, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fabula Nova Crystallis (XII/Versus XII/Agito XII)[edit]

I added (or modified) the entries for Versus and Agito, as they have been mentioned. (And for completeness sake.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.231.194.10 (talkcontribs) 22:22, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unicode[edit]

I made the mistake of saving an intermediary copy of this article in a non-Unicode encoding. Lots of the Japanese titles (and, therefore, links) are probably broken as a result. I'll have to go through the list and fix them. SharkD (talk) 10:30, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedic[edit]

This wiki is SO incomplete that its literally an embarrassment that the article contains the word 'comprehensive' in the first sentence. Give me a break. This doesn't belong on wikipedia, a link to gamefaqs.com on the console role-playing game page serves the same purpose. Its not encyclopedic content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.39.250.119 (talk) 16:45, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links to gamefaqs get deleted on sight, IIRC. SharkD (talk) 10:48, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ports, remakes, etc.[edit]

The current "notes" for ports and remakes are a bit too verbose. I can probably shorten them to "Port/remake of [platform] version ([date])", and only keep the current format if the game titles differ in some way. SharkD (talk) 17:51, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I should also probably list the platform the game's predecessor was released on. SharkD (talk) 01:45, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Split again?[edit]

This list may need to be split even further, as it is still rather large. Should it be split into halves of a decade, or should the split coincide with the beginning of a platform or platform generation? SharkD (talk) 02:34, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Double check dates[edit]

I add some games from the comupter RPG list here in this edit. The dates probably need to be double-checked. SharkD (talk) 04:40, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More columns[edit]

Some other things I'm considering doing is moving the Action/Tactical RPG info into two new columns. Also, I am considering (but not very seriously) creating additional columns for the previous/next games in the series. This will make the table rather tight, space-wise, so these changes may not be implemented after all. SharkD (talk) 00:57, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The addition of the "Sub-genre" column has made the tables a lot uglier than they were before. However, there's no way to sort them based on this criteria otherwise. SharkD (talk) 07:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other changes[edit]

The 2000s and 1990s articles may need to be split into half-decades. The "Series debuts" notice should maybe only be reserved for the very first release, not any subsequent re-releases. SharkD (talk) 07:01, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the removal links in the right-hand columns may make the pages load faster. SharkD (talk) 07:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting the Article[edit]

This article's name indicates that it is specific to Console role-playing games, a term that specifies a genre distinct from Computer role-playing games. This genre is also known under such synonyms as "Eastern RPG" and "Japanese RPG" (JPRG).

I realize that the article's header then goes on to explain that, despite how the genre has been defined in Wikipedia already, this article will cover anything that even remotely resembles something to do with an RPG, as long as it came out on a console, or something close to a console (like the early Japanese home computers). So, although they have nothing to do with JRPG's, computer rpg's, tactical rpg's, action rpg's, etc. are all included.

That all being said, I'd like to make a proposal. In an effort to bring this closer to an actual JRPG page, *and* because Tactical RPG's already have an extremely similar page (Chronology of tactical role-playing video games), would anyone have an issue if we at least stripped out the Tactical RPG's and just included a "further" link to the chronology page for that genre? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dawynn (talkcontribs) 18:50, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think people will complain and want to add them again. I also don't think it's a good idea. SharkD (talk) 17:22, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Zelda[edit]

??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Malarkee~enwiki (talkcontribs) 13:22, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I'm not sure either. So far I've chosen to not include Zelda and other Adventure RPG's like Landstalker since they traditionally are sorted into the adventure genre. But I'm not gonna touch it for the time being. If enough people should object to it though I think it should be deleted. I also just noticed that Dark Savior is in there aswell, that game should maybe also go I guess. There are other titles aswell that might be in doubt, like Dragon Valor that Haoie mentioned. (Djungelurban 14:46, 22 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]
  • Okay, this is getting ridiculous. We've gone from debating whether to include Zelda, to arguing over which games in the Zelda series to include. Apparently Zelda 1, 3, and 5 are okay, but Zelda 2 is not. What about Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker? This kinda defeats the point of having a chronology of console role-playing games. --Buuneko 02:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm gonna go ahead and delete all adventure RPG's that I can find for the time being then. Thus eliminating the confusion. If someone feels that adventure RPG's belong in this list, then please state it here and they might be be reinserted given that good enough arguments are given. If all Zelda games are entered that will bring in some opinionated people and I just wanna have something to point towards and say "look here, isn't this a good enough reason". And the reason why Wind Waker and Link's awakening are included is because no one has entered them. I'm not telling you to do that but that's why they're missing. (Djungelurban 00:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]
  • I'm not a role-playing game guy, but as far as I know, you need to have the choice of a role to play. In the Zelda francise, you are always Link, and except in the second game you cannot control how you level up, except by getting items. Zelda 2 could be considered a hybrid RPG, and adventure game, listed in both categories or neither.--Ben414 15:58, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's not that clean cut. For example, in most Japanese RPG's, you have no choice in the character you are since the game is so storybound. A lot of the time the influence that you have on the story itself is virtually nonexistant. You might sometimes get different ending depending on different actions but sometimes it's 100% scripted. Leveling has been a important part of RPG's for a long time, but it doesn't always work the same and it's not too hard to imagine an RPG without any leveling. This is why the concept of what an RPG is a bit hazy. I don't think anyone disputes that the Zelda games, and similar titles, has connections to both genres, the question is however whether they natively belong in the adventure genre or in the RPG genre. (Djungelurban 00:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]
  • If Zelda is excluded, then shouldn't its clones like Neutopia ('89 PCE) and its sequel also go? Personally I'm for adding Zelda to the list (and I'd like to note both lists mentioned at the top of this discussion include versions of it), but if you do exclude it then at the very least these games should be dropped. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SDNick484 (talkcontribs) 08:19, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aren't video game RPGs ones that focus on levelling, gaining exp or stat building? Zelda is none of these things. I'm pretty sure it's not the same as the broader definition of role-playing, which boils down to pretending to be any character. There are even separate articles for each! 82.112.141.71 (talk)

I put back Zelda II because GameFaqs, AllGame, and the Wikipedia article all call it an "Action RPG". Zelda I is an Action-Adventure. I haven't looked at the others yet. Slowly working through a number of lists... Dawynn (talk) 11:28, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

American v. Japanese Games[edit]

I would create separate pages for games released only in Japan and those released in the US. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.138.205.144 (talkcontribs) 18:53, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. I highly disagree. The point is a Chronology of the genre. How is that helped by separating where the games were released? Dawynn (talk) 11:29, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crystalis version switch[edit]

The North American and Japanese titles of Crystalis seem to be switched around. --71.198.160.102 (talk) 04:28, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Conventions Used[edit]

OK -- I'm trying to document this whole thing. Not sure about the best place to put the notes. The intention is, if I've put a note next to the platform indicator, then I've located a resource for the release date, game name, publisher, developer, and system indicated. If I put an indicator next to the sub-genre, then the note is intended to indicate the sub-genre. Additional notes are not verified, unless they have separate notes.

If someone has ideas for a better system, let me know.

And yes, every RPG should have an identifiable sub-genre or mix of sub-genres. Although, I recognize one or two sub-genres not otherwise recognized. Dungeon Crawl was very prevalent in the early years. I thought this was a thing where you're basically on a monty haul mission, and never really leave the dungeon. Think Wizardry, and Eye of the Beholder. But, I've seen the Bard's Tale series described this way also. My main concern is really the JRPG, but I try to go with what the reviewers indicate.

Oh, and this is really a very tiring job. If I get the 80's done, I may be too exhausted to go much further. But its a start. Dawynn (talk) 02:18, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stretching the definition[edit]

Some titles mentioned, such as Dragon Valor, really shouldn't be considered as RPG. Haoie 06:18, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Whether not a certain game is or isn't an RPG is something of an ambiguous definition. There are certainly games in this list that could be argued to belong to another genre, just like some people quite succesfully can argue that for example Zelda in fact is an RPG. Dragon Valor could very well be one such "grey zone" game and until there's a convincing argument why it should be removed I suggest that we keep it around. I myself don't even have an actual opinion yet since I've only played it for a couple of minutes.
  • Note: Action-Adventure games and Action RPG's are often very difficult to tell apart. Like all of Wikipedia, its about what you can document. If you can find careful reviews that document a game as an Action RPG, then reference the review, and list it. If all the reviews are calling the game an action-adventure, then remove it from the list. Dawynn (talk) 12:42, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where are the MSX games?[edit]

There seem to be a lot of early rpg's missing which i remember playing on the MSX/MSX2. Games like SD Snatcher or Hydlide 2. Some of these were even exclusive to the system.

Now i understand that the list is a CONSOLE rpg list, but i consider the msx as a console kind of home computer, especially because it was, together with PC Engine, so immensly important in the development of the genre. Furthermore, the msx had cartridge slots which were used to plug games into. Furthermore, there was a version of the msx released without a keyboard and with joypads included, so there is at least one console that plays MSX games.

The early development of the JRPG genre is fascinating and MSX is definitely a part of it. Please take a look into its history. A lot of typical japanese games started their lifes in that scene. Games like Xak, Ys, Dragon Quest and Hydlide, but also games like Metal Gear (first ever version!!) , Gradius, Vapire Killer were released on the system. Good retro stuff!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.79.34.140 (talkcontribs) 12:52, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and add MSX games. I added it to the list of platforms. SharkD (talk) 04:46, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The main problem I have had with the Japanese platforms is finding a) sources that list the various games for the platform, and b) sources that document the genre for a specific game. I have been hard at work trying to supply the list of games for these older platforms. As you can imagine, it is quite time-consuming. Remember, this is Wikipedia. You are allowed to make additions / corrections to these pages. But please document what you are adding. Dawynn (talk) 12:48, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The list is too large[edit]

I have trouble loading the article in my browser, it's so big. Maybe it should be split by decade? SharkD (talk) 04:47, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We've split it by half-decade, and its still very large. If each list is fully completed, and documented, they will each be easily twice as large as the desired page size for a Wikipedia article. Any other ideas for splitting? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dawynn (talkcontribs) 12:51, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Milestone[edit]

According to the resources I'm using, that should pretty well cover all the RPG's released on consoles. I have left out, or removed, a number of games where one resource thought it was an RPG, but more reliable resources indicated it was an action-adventure. And as I research the genres, other games may still be removed from this list. Still, if anyone else wants to make anexhaustive search for RPG's on console systems -- be my guest. Verification is always welcome on Wikipedia.

I used Generation MSX to list RPG games for the MSX / MSX2 systems. I have not found similar reliable resources for the other early Japanese computers. If anyone can find reliable resources for these systems, please help pull out the RPG's to add to our list. Dawynn (talk) 11:26, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Localization templates for titles[edit]

You might notice that I placed the game titles within localization templates. I tried to use common sense when calling a title the "English" title or the "Japanese" title, but was not always 100% sure. It would be better yet if the titles were marked by region instead of language (JA and EN are languages, JP and NA are regions), but I don't have this data. I would like to see the same thing done to the other columns, such as developer and especially publisher, since these often vary by region. I don't have this data either however. Finally, you should also notice a slight decrease in page loading time, as the title fields now all use a single template instead of multiple bullet templates, and pages take less time to load when fewer templates are used. Brian Sawyerz "Dungeon" for PET[edit]

There's a game from the Nov/Dec issue of 'CURSOR' magazine in '79 for the PET called Dungeon that I think ought get credit for being a Roguelike on the list... anyone's thoughts?

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of role-playing video games: 1988 to 1989's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Merge completed[edit]

All listed games from all platforms have now been merged on this page. Format still needs a bit of work for parallelism. Dawynn (talk) 14:43, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Revisit of Tactical RPG split[edit]

I know this is a reask of the immediately preceding question. However, the immediately preceding question was originally on a page with a considerably different focus. Previously, the question was on a page specific to console RPG's. Long story short, the previous list was attempting to document all RPG's built for consoles, regardless of subgenre.

Now, we've merged the computer and console lists back together, creating a massive conglomerate list. And we have already pulled all MMORPG's, MUD's, and Roguelikes from this massive list. In addition, we already have a separate chronology of tactical role-playing games page that attempts to track all the TRPGs.

So, we have precedent for splitting out certain sub-genres, and also have a list well-started for TRPG's. Is there any reason we want to continue duplicating the work of the TRPG pages? Or can we finally pull the TRPG's out of the main RPG list?

Dawynn (talk) 19:08, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Its worth noting that, while RPG games have their fans, so do strategy games. And the two fanbases are not the same. Tactical RPG's try to combine parts of both worlds and have created a completely distinct fanbase. Now while there is some crossover between the three fanbases, I would think that these games are a distinct enough genre to warrant having a separate listing. By separating the listing, both RPG and Strategy articles can point to the Tactical games, without having to duplicate efforts in relisting everything on the TRPG list. Dawynn (talk) 02:15, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that would be OK. If someone complains we can deal with it then. SharkD  Talk  15:16, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Genre column[edit]

How about another column for Action RPG, Tactical RPG, etc.? SharkD  Talk  06:25, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The new "subgenre" column works well for this. SharkD  Talk  01:34, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge request[edit]

Merge with List of role-playing video games: 2012 to 2013 and List of role-playing video games: 2014 to 2015 to List of 2010s role-playing video games

Rationale: Combining the games of two years in a list is an arbitrary inclusion criterion and incompatible with our categorization system. Acceptable cut-off dates are "year, decade, century, or other well-defined time period (such as historical era)" per WP:ARBITRARYCAT which is transferable to lists. --PanchoS (talk) 01:35, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think merging the last few articles into a 2010 to 2019 list would be okay. I don't think we should combine the earlier articles though since they are so big and can slow your browser. SharkD  Talk  20:58, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The lists are a lot larger now. I think a 10 year grouping would crash a lot of browsers. SharkD  Talk  04:49, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose merge on the grounds that the decade-long list is estimated to be too long. For example, '14-'15 page is 27k, so a decade-long list would be over 100k. The WP:ARBITRARYCAT argument is valid, but if enforced the better solution would be to split to single year lists. My view is the lists are better left as this they are, on the grounds that a biennial list is not completely arbitrary, and produces a manageable result.
