Is there interest in developing on this list?[edit]

I have an interest in a specific *brand* of sewing machine and would like to see how far Wikipedia wants to develop this list.

In common with a lot of domestic / light engineering products (typewriters spring to mind), there is a distinction between manufacturers and brands of sewing machines. I see the industry divided into three categories, the lines between them are fuzzy and I am totally open to debate on this...

  • Companies who manufactured machines and sold them under their own brand: eg Singer
  • Companies who manufactured machines and sold many to other companies to sell under their brand: The Japanese are the prime example but this happened all over the world. This is not cut & dried because many companies sold machines under their own brand domestically and exported the exact same model overseas to be sold under a different brand. Brother is the perfect example but this was a standard business model for many if not most Japanese manufacturers.
  • Companies who sold machines manufactured by other companies under their own brand. This is my own niche, I am documenting the Australian Lemair Helvetia brand. It was marketed machines under it's own label which were ALL imported machines with minor fitting done in Australia (motors, cases & labels) focusing more as a company on sales and support. I cannot stress how widespread this business model was, perhaps Nelco in America is a good example, starting off as a distributor of European machines (Necchi & Elna) and then eventually selling Japanese made machines under their own brand.

At the bare minimum, this subject needs to have two lists...

  • List of sewing machine brands
  • List of sewing machine manufacturers

...which are cross-referenced between the two

I can expand and give more information here and will contribute if there is interest but I have fallen afoul before of Wikipedia's penchant for cutting back on articles that it doesn't deem to be notable and have no desire to waste my time again.
