Canada was a Dominion, so, it was a self-administered colony better than a really independent state.

Crete was an Ottoman protectorate and never became independent. While in 1905 was transferred to Greece.

Ha'il, better known as Djebel Shammar, formally was an Ottoman dependency, though in fact inedependent.

Ashanti became part of British Gold Coast in 1896, so, in 1899 was no more a sovereign state.

Kongo was a Portuguese protectorate, that sometime claimed independence.

Finally, I think that the name "South Africa" for the Boer Republic is misleading. In fact its official name was "South African Republic" but it was better known as "Transvaal". The name "South Africa" usually means the British South African Union since 1901 and the susequent independent Republic, formed by the previous four colonies, while it is not used to indicate the Boers Republic.
