I do agree that not all the theaters in this list are notable. However, to my knowledge it is not a requirement that each item in a list be notable, only that the article, itself, be notable. See Wikipedia:Notability. Even if a theater of this type is too small or newly formed to have achieved notability, I believe it still deserves to be on this list. Also, I think many of the red links removed from the list are notable, but dont have English articles written on them for various reasons, the primary reason being that they are located in non-English-speaking countries.

All of the items listed should have an article, because Wikipedia is not a list of indiscriminate info. Per this guide, "Each entry on a list should have its own non-redirect article in English Wikipedia". TNXMan 16:41, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

criterion[edit]

It's hard to determine exactly which theaters fit the criterion to be "theaters for dance". It seems to me that, although some of these theaters-- City Center, PS 122, NY State Theater, and the Metropolitan Opera House-- present a lot of dance performances, their missions are not to present dance, specifically, and should therefore be removed from the list. It seems that the theaters whose mission is to serve specifically as a venue for dance performances fit into a few categories:

  • venues run by dance presenters (like Dance Place, Danspace, DTW, the Joyce, ODC, etc) - these venues typically also offer classes and have resident companies; often the space is convertible studio/theater
  • venues run by dance studios (like Jack Guidone, Joria, Green Space) - for use by the studio for recitals, typically rent their space out for other performances; usually smaller spaces, studio converts into theater (focus on the studio)
  • venues owned by large, well-established dance companies (Mark Morris Dance Center) - space is used primarily by a single company

Although many theaters that don't fit into these categories house dance performances, I would not consider them to be theaters for dance.

City Center, Metropolitan Opera House, and New York State Theatre[edit]

City Center functions as a producer with its annual Fall for Dance festival, an enormous undertaking; it and the Metropolitan Opera House are the two homes of the American Ballet Theatre, one of the most important dance companies in the US. The Met. is also frequent home to the major Russian ballet companies. This list is meaningless if they are omitted; likewise the New York State Theater, which was built to George Balanchine's specifications for the New York City Ballet. There is at least as strong a case for these venues as for B.A.M. I would agree with you that such spaces as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and the New Jersey State Theatre are not such frequent presenters of dance that they belong on this specialized list (though the former is Savion Glover's home theatre and the latter has hosted the ballet from Perm.)
