Merge[edit]

Differences between List of census towns in the Republic of Ireland (henceforth "census") and List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population (henceforth "urban"):

  • urban has ranking, which is useful, and "Change [in ranking] since 2006", which I think is trivial.
  • urban has images down the RHS, which I think are decorative rather than informative, and which eat into the screen real-estate that would better display useful tabular info.
    • Census has legal status, area, density.
    • An image column (with a single thumbnail per row, not a collage) would be useful if most of the rows had it populated.
  • urban is much shorter, which is better in the sense of making the page easier to edit (and, on older browsers, to view) but worse in being less informative.

Object A ranking on size from urban areas (often bigger than a census town) is totally different from a plain list of census towns. For example: part of the census town Cratloe in Co. Clare belongs to the suburbs of Limerick. Separate lists are far better. The Banner talk 13:17, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps some misunderstandings:
  • A census town is indeed the same as an urban area. Check the population figures in the two pages: they match. A census town is different from a municipal town, which has legal boundaries; those are listed in a separate page called List of cities, boroughs and towns in the Republic of Ireland, which I do not propose to merge. The CSO considered that there was sufficient green space between Limerick and Cratloe to make them separate areas. By contrast, Coonagh was separate in 2006 but was absorbed into Limerick in 2011.
  • "Merge" presupposes combining the data from both articles. In this case, one can add a "Ranking" column to the census table. (Maybe ever 2 columns, one for 2011 and one for 2006).

I find this article much better. By leaving out the suburb towns it is much more accurate. If a merge is created this table should become the ranking — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brancott (talkcontribs) 00:41, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Brancott:, Which do you mean by "this article"? Neither "leaves out the suburb towns". jnestorius(talk) 21:20, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of census towns in the Republic of Ireland is full of mistakes and is actually quite hard to understand because of this. Since the Reform of Local Government in 2014 the council areas referred to as Borough or UD no longer exist and so the areas and densities listed in the article no longer apply to anything that exists in law. The areas and densities do not apply to the populations listed in the first place, an example is, The population of Drogheda is listed from the 2011 census as 38,578 the article states that that population is within a "Borough" council area of 215sq.km2." 1. Under the reform of local government the Borough council area is now a much wider Borough District which takes in the entire of South Louth. 2. 30,393 was the population of the Borough of Drogheda in 2011[1] not 38,578 as stated, this is the population of the entire urban area of Drogheda including its suburbs outside of that Borough council administrative area, ie The settlement population.

The new Municipal and Borough districts that cover each county may contain more than one town, so they cannot be used to represent the population of an urban area. Settlement populations will need to be used as a true representation of population of a built up area, for this reason the article List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population is fine just how it is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glen2014 (talkcontribs) 17:46, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Glen2014: You seem to have misunderstood the List of census towns article. This does provide evidence that it is "quite hard to understand", but it is not "full of mistakes". It is easier to understand if one reads the section "Explanation of table". In particular, as the explanation states, the "Area" column is NOT the area within the municipal limit; it is the built-up area as defined and measured by the CSO. The 2011 municipal area and population of Drogheda was 12.76km2 and 30,393 (as shown in List of cities, boroughs and towns in the Republic of Ireland). The built-up area and population shown in List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population was 15km2 (not 215km2) and 38,578. The rest of your comment is therefore irrelevant. I have just now moved the Explanation section before the main table to make it harder to overlook, and updated the "Council" explanation for the 2014 changes. The "Council" column remains of interest, albeit historical. jnestorius(talk) 21:20, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
