Women[edit]

Can the section on the status of women and elections be clarified - it might be taken to indicate that women weren;t eligible when they were. Jackiespeel 16:24, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I understand it the legislation and Bill they weren't eligible to be councillors until the enactment of the Qualification of Women (County and Borough Councils) Act 1907, and couldn't vote until the Representation of the People Act 1918. Lozleader 23:09, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suitably qualified women were eligible to vote and stand in certain areas of local government and School Board elections prior to 1907 (and on the Isle of Man: the work they had carried out in those areas was to be part of the argument for being given the national vote. Copy of the Act[edit]

Where can I find a copy of the 1899 Act?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.158.65.178 (talkcontribs) 09:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

A good reference library should have a copy, bound up in a volume for the year 1899.Lozleader 13:10, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stoke Newington[edit]

The Borough of Stoke Newington is missing from the table in the section Areas of the Metropolitan Boroughs, although it is included in the map. The Stoke Newington article indicates that the borough was the successor to two local authorities: the vestry of Stoke Newington parish in the County of London and the South Hornsey Urban District Council in Middlesex. I would make the changes, but am not sure about to describe the area in a way consistent with the rest of the table. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.19.151 (talk) 15:22, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
