May 2022 revert[edit]

I reverted here a sentence that was added to the lead section, "Others have contended, including Watanabe, that the movie was filled with stereotypes which served to highlight the plight of the protagonist and moved the plot forward." The source here has the interviewer saying, "And to single out your character to me misses the point. Sixteen Candles is filled with stereotypes... which serve to make Molly Ringwald's very normal desire for a great 16th birthday and a handsome boyfriend seem that much funnier." and Watanabe says, "Yes, the movie isn't mean to the character [Long Duk Dong] and doesn't single him out..." then later, "Maybe indirectly, John thought he was breaking a stereotype," with the character partying and not studying.

Based on this source, which is just the interviewer talking to Watanabe, there is no multiple "others" contending that the character was one of multiple intentional stereotypical characters, and Watanabe in the source is equivocal about the criticism over the stereotype, "...all I'll say about that is that because there weren't enough Asians onscreen, comedy was kind of looked down upon... But because there were so few Asian actors onscreen at that time, people were looking for Kurosawa in a comedy and Sixteen Candles wasn't that kind of movie." Cinofile, see above about why what you added is not appropriate. In a nutshell, it is MOS:WEASEL wording, that multiple "others" said something where it is really just the interviewer, and Watanabe not even agreeing directly with that person.
