This topic, along with Short-Run, should be merged in an extension to Production Functions

Long run and short run are very closely related, they should be merged

Merge with Long term and Short-run

Long-term currently redirects to long-run. This fact combined with the duplicate information on long-run and long term give me the impression that these two terms refer to the same concept. For this reason, long-run and long term should be merged. Also, a merge with short-run was suggested this time last year, but it has never been acted upon. Neither of these articles are large enough to stand on their own, therefore this merge should occur as well.

I think the long-run is more suitable to talk about economic issues. Therefore, whether a change of long terḿs definition or a fusion with the long-run one should be applied. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.147.148.73 (talk) 21:44, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, they should be merged. I am a very important professor of Economics at a very prestigious university. I demand the two be merged. If they are not merged I will edit the recipies for cookies all over the world and instruct them to be baked with 5 pounds of sugar. You have 72 hours. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.180.37.143 (talk) 23:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Oppose — the article "Long-term" is a terminology for "extending over a relatively long time period" relating to time in general and not restricted to only economics. Therefor it is inappropriate to merge the articles. — RW Marloe (talk) 20:18, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

I have reproduced above for this subsection the only 2 serious responses to the merger template for Long run and Short run with a heading that specifies more exactly what is proposed. The merger into "Long run" is because the latter has a much longer list of edits. However, any merger should reproduce a copy of the history of the "Short run" article here.

I favor merger because the long run and short run are relative to each other, like husband and wife. One is incomplete without the other. Comparing and contrasting is easier in one article than two. As to RW Marloe's point, the LR & SR articles are all about Econ already. Here's a scholarly source for a merged article: Carlo Panico and Fabio Petri, "long run and short run," The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, Second Edition, 2008, Abstract. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 00:28, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Preparatory to merger (with no dissents above, a copy of the Short run article is copied below for the record, its Edit history, Talk page and its history.

Merge of Short run into Long run with Move of "Long run" title to "Long run and short run" done. I'll archive this proposal section in a month. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 08:32, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

In economics, the concept of the short run refers to the decision-making time frame of a firm in which at least one factor of production is fixed. Costs which are fixed in the short-run have no impact on a firm decisions. For example a firm can raise output by increasing the amount of labor through overtime.

A generic firm can make three changes in the short run:

  • Increase production
  • Decrease production
  • Shut down

In the short run, a profit-maximizing firm will:
