Lophopetalum wightianum[edit]

In the early days, when I entered Pencil Industry, manufacturers widely used this wood, and was called Venkota. This used to be a Beautiful wood, a plain structure, Moderate softness, and easy to sharpen. Machining property (after Treatment & Seasoning) used to be excellent at Grooving and Shaping Stage and if properly dried NO Polishing process was needed.

A Company named Atul Wood Industries (owned by Mr. Shivdasan) was making very good quality Treated & Seasoned Pencil Slats of Venkota Wood and supplying to Few Pencil manufacturers like Hindustan Pencils, Paradise Pencils and Camlin Limited. But in short time the Forest Department of Kerala state declared this as exotics wood and supplies were stopped.

Even today, after 50 years of experience as a Pencil Engineer and Wood Scientist I am searching for this wood. Pencilwala (talk) 09:50, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
