Statue

I've heard a rumor that a smaller statue of Dzerzhinsky is back up in front of the building. Is this true? T. Wong 17:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

I saw the building in October 2008 and there weren't any statues in front, although I didn't look too closely because it's apparently illegal to photograph it or loiter nearby! The original statue of Dzerzhinsky is still in "Sculpture Park". --Kelmaon (talk) 06:26, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
No such statue during my visit there in June 2009. Illegal to photograph the building, eh? Wilson44691 (talk) 20:33, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Etymology?

  • Russian луб means "bast fibre". Was the place called 'Lubyanka' before built-up Moscow expanded that far? Was the place, or some old building there, used for making and/or storing goods made of bast fibre? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 05:32, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

This source [1] says that in 1478 и 1510 Novgorod aristocracy was forced to resettle to Moscow by Ivan III and his son and, probably, they named the place after a street in Novgorod called Lubyanitsa. The name of the Novgorod street was possibly realted to the fact that the paving was made of bast fibre there (it was common). Olegwiki (talk) 12:43, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Lat./Long.?

It would be nice to have the Lat/Long for Google Maps, etc. users. If it's not illegal in Russia to publish it...

Needs work

This article is a good start, but really needs substantially more references.

Also, the second paragraph is written with far too flowery a tone; it is very unlike Wikipedia's normal encyclopaedic, neutrally descriptive tone. I Googled it, and it seems to be copied verbatim from a travel guide to Moscow, which is obviously not acceptable, but unfortunately I don't really know what to replace it with and I don't want to simply remove it without anything else to take its place.

I know it'd be better for me to fix the problem than to just point it out and pass it on to others, but I don't have much background knowledge at all of the subject, and the improvements required are quite deep and sweeping, so I don't think it would be a good idea for me to attempt them.

Hopefully someone else has the background, time, and willingness to improve this article.BreakfastJr (talk) 04:00, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Joke

"Siberia can be seen from its basement"? I don't get it - perhaps this has to be explained (or deleted)?--Canuckguy (talk) 23:51, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

The idea being, if you were unlucky enough to end up in the basement (where the tortures etc took place), then the next thing you would be likely to see was Siberia (i.e., in exile). Geddit?!?! And you know the problem with explaining jokes! Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 11:13, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

You haven't said what you think is erroneous about the coordinates given in the article, and they appear to me to be correct. If you still think that there is an error, please give a clear explanation of the problem below. Deor (talk) 03:46, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
