Technical[edit]

This article is too technical, and no general definition was given. I'm sure there are plenty of this or thats, but it should be clear to the standard reader what something typically is when it is labelled a "MIDI controller". The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.250.74.88 (talk • contribs) .

User:Trweiss has rewritten it to be less technical. Quarl (talk) 2006-01-15 22:10Z

merge[edit]

I think this should be merged into MIDI. Please comment at Talk:Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Quarl (talk) 2006-01-15 22:55Z

MIDI is a crowded subject. It's better to expand this article, and offload some of the existing "MIDI controller" article from the main topic. Dementia13 (talk) 20:31, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Music Controller[edit]

The subject is more properly "Music controller" rather than "MIDI Controller," because many new controllers (e.g., Monome emit Open Sound Control data rather than (or in addition to) MIDI. It is the fact that these devices control musical data that is relevant, not which data standard they support.

"MIDI Controller" is itself a fairly large subject. Maybe non-MIDI controllers should have a separate article. Also keep in mind that a MIDI controller is not necessarily a "music" controller: it could be for stage lighting, mixer, or FX control. Dementia13 (talk) 20:29, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not just new controllers, but technology that predates MIDI as well, such as CV keyboards. Calling them "music controllers" has little precedent and is general to the point of uselessness; by a charitable definition one might consider the crank of a street organ a "music controller". At the same time, it's too specific for the current subject matter of the article. Neither OSC nor MIDI are necessarily used for music. 78.82.191.180 (talk) 10:32, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
