Claim needs source[edit]

Regarding the claim "She was the first Vietnamese woman elected to public office in California in 2002." I'd like to see a source for that. "Public office" is so broad a term, I can't believe that given California's large Vietnamese population that no Vietnamese woman had been elected to a school board or city council *somewhere* in the state. 71.139.22.182 16:42, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Non-NPOV Sections[edit]

The following seems very opinionated. It seems like it was written by a member of the group that is trying to recall her:

The "Little Saigon" controversy. Madison Nguyen is currently under threat of recall by the public at large due to her lack of democratic support for the community position around the naming of a Vietnamese district in San Jose. The very community that once supported Nguyen now heads up the effort to expose and hold her accountable for a flawed record as an advocate for the community.

I rewrote that section based on a number of sources. I've also removed the following paragraph, which is equally non-neutral:
In just under two years, she became President of the Board of Education, during which time she advocated for more after-school programs for youth, implemented programs for parents to become more involved and active with the schools and the community, established more technological programs, and engaged in hiring a workforce to reflect the diverse district. Under her leadership, Franklin-McKinley School District opened up two new state-of-the-art schools. As well as being an active member of the Board of Education, Nguyen worked full time as an Associate Ombudsperson with the County of Santa Clara's office of Human relations, served as a member of the United Way of Silicon Valley Community Advisory Board, and the Asian American Community Advisory Council at San Jose State University. She also taught sociology and Vietnamese American Culture at both De Anza and Evergreen Valley community colleges.
It's a direct copy-and-paste of [4]. It could be paraphrased to the extent that it's no longer a copyvio, but it's also unduly self-promotional; we shouldn't reinsert any of that information unless third-party sources have found it worth mentioning. cab (talk) 07:25, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

Are works of the San Jose city government in the public domain the same way that California state government works are? If so, there's quite a few that could be used [5]. California state works are not public domain. The government exception is only for the federal government, not state, municipal or foreign governments. See Copyright status of work by the U.S. government. The link you post above is now dead, but be aware that the presence of a photo on a U.S. government site does not mean that it's a U.S. government work. For example, there's a photo of Nguyen at a U.S. State Department website at [[7]], but the photo is an AP photo, not a government work. TJRC (talk) 17:34, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why all this controversy over a name?[edit]

Those of us outside the local Vietnamese community don't understand why there has been so much controversy over a name. After reviewing other sources, I have a theory as to why, and if this is correct, it should be documented here.

The theory: The name "Saigon Business District" fails to capture that this part of San Jose is not merely a business district, but a community where people live, worship, and go to school. It may be a business district to visitors, but it's a community for those who live there.

Madison Nguyen's recall attempt is based on her failure to represent that community, and her attempt to name that community a "business district" demonstrates that she is unaware that her countrymen are more than businesses. As the first Vietnamese American to occupy a seat on the city council, this community had hoped she would be their voice.

I have a feeling that if I could speak and read Vietnamese, I would find many ways to cite this. Can someone confirm? --Cputrdoc (talk) 17:29, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unauthorised copying of this article by Madison Nguyen's website[edit]

Whoever manages Madison Nguyen's website changed the biography there to a thinly-edited version of this Wikipedia article [8], minus all the less favourable bits, plus a few details/corrections. You can see the old version at the Internet Archive. Compare with our version on Wikipedia around February 28 [9].

They're also falsely claiming copyright over the content there. However, in fact, it's their version that is a copyvio of Wikipedia (since they're not displaying a copy of the GFDL, a list of authors, etc). Thanks, cab (talk) 00:34, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Chinese American"[edit]

Some anonymous user keeps inserting the description "Chinese American" into the Little Saigon debate section. Given the insistence with which this (and only this) is being done, and the fact that Mrs. Nguyen is currently in the middle of an election, I would like to see an explanation as to why that description, applied to a peripheral individual in the controversy in question, has significance, and isn't simply a prejudicial characterization that violates WP:NPOV. Or I'd like to see this edit made by a non-anonymous editor. Otherwise, I'm going to continue to revert it. Jokeboy (talk) 23:32, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Brown Act Violation[edit]

I'm removing the comments about the Brown Act violation for several reasons, but I think mention of it in this article in some other form might still be warranted. First, a blog post isn't a credible reference. Second, the text as written says "the Brown Act was violated", but I've found references that say the Judge specifically stated in his ruling that he could *not* find that a Brown Act violation occurred (http://vacnorcal.webs.com/). Third, this is again diverging significantly from the topic of the page, which is *not* the details of the Little Saigon controversy, but rather Madison Nguyen.

I started to add a comment about the Judge's ruling higher up in the paragraph before the one that was added, but I can't justify doing so without a reliable reference (preferably an online version of the Judge's ruling, which I wasn't able to find). I'm not sure the ruling is relevant to the topic of "Madison Nguyen" at all, because the ruling resulted in no remedy or judicial action whatsoever - the Judge apparently said "I can't say if there was a violation, but it's irrelevant, because even if there was, the City Council remedied it itself already".

There seems to be some interest in documenting the Little Saigon controversy in detail. This should be done either on the San_Jose,_California page, or maybe on its own page. But getting into anything but a general description of the controversy on the Madison Nguyen page seems inappropriate to me.
