Are there any other similar websites/music labels? Sblive 13:25, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Magnatune website down - any further info anyone?

Looks like an interview with Magnatune's founder was on Digg on 9/11. Maybe they got slammed. Self 13:21, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Site's not just offline...can't even resolve the domain name. Kevinjscott 04:44, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is it worth mentioning that the music of the popular XBox Live Arcade game Braid consists entirely out of magnatune music? This fact is mentioned in the games article but might be worth mentioning here, too. What do you think? -- panzi (talk) 20:28, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Amarok[edit]

I was the one adding the line about Amarok. I wasn't sure if I needed to reference it, but the reference is here Podex 20:33, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The reference is broken, so it's probably better that you didn't add it to the article. 71.145.196.139 18:08, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MP3 preview[edit]

I just checked the Magnatune site again and didn't find any way to download a preview of the mp3 file before buying. I think we should correct that and leave just the possibility of stream albums before buying.

They don't use DRM - technically, if you can stream it, you can save it. All you have to do is take a slight interest, open the xspf or m3u file in a text editor, and copy the URLs from there. They've presumably made the decision that
  1. For a preview, people want to _stream_ the file and play it immediately, not download the whole thing before playing it.
  2. It's not in their interest to provide a 1-click download.
  3. Support for their streaming technologies is widespread enough that they don't need to provide downloads as a fallback.
But for the purposes of the article I'd agree with you Sourcejedi 16:47, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I recall some statement that they just give a damn. Probably it even reduces their server load. It's incredibly easy - wget -i hifi.m3u (the hifi.m3u is the playlist). It seems also to be officially endorsed: http://www.magnatune.com/info/openmusic All our 128k mp3s are available under the "Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike " license from Creative Commons to promote these goals. Specifically, this means: You can listen to our Internet radio stations, download our free music, and share with anyone you like. Sounds like there is zero problem. Now if there was just some way to pay them with a Maestro (debit card) --145.253.2.238 (talk) 11:55, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Go to any album page like this and click on 'License' button, then click on 'Creative Commons' - MP3 downloads available there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.194.183.121 (talk) 18:31, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New pricing model?[edit]

When did they switch over to a $299 one time payment for full access to downloads? They also overlay free streaming playback with random advertisements for this "low, low" price. Kode54 (talk) 08:45, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Magnatune does not seem to be working anymore. Las blogposts, last Facebook posts are from 2015. Do not answer to messages. Password resetting service does not work - the e-mail does not arrive. Please check if you can, and I think this information deserves to be mentioned somehow here.2001:7D0:8887:B780:5163:7D2A:F9D2:D763 (talk) 07:29, 11 July 2017 (UTC). - Sorry, this may have been a premature assumption - although the part about blog and FB and pwd service was correct.2001:7D0:8887:B780:285E:D3A:2E24:683A (talk) 09:16, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
