The new playoff format, confirmed on march 2, 2012, results in new tie breaking procdures. For a start, teams from the same divison can now play each other in the same round. Second, the phrase "the wildcard," has become ambigious since there are two wildcards. Third, the extra wildcard also changes how ties would be broken (whether statistics are used, such as head to head or whether a tie breaker game for the second wildcard is needed)in many different situations. Mixed 3-Way Tie for SECOND wildcard?[edit]

The article explains what happens in a "Mixed 3-way tie" with the FIRST wildcard team. (The two teams from the same division would play each other for the division title, with the loser dropping to the second wildcard spot.) But what happens if this circumstance arises in a tie with the SECOND wildcard team? Would the loser of the divisional game be eliminated from the postseason or would they still have a chance to become the second wildcard?

In other words, does the result of game 163 for a division title count towards the standings for Wild Card spots? 3 WAY TIE FOR 2 WILD CARD SPOTS[edit]

In a situation where there is a three way tie between non division winners and there is no other non division winner with a better record claiming wild card 1; a tiebreaker eliminating 1 of the 3 teams will follow. Based on a group head to head record. Teams A B and C will be created. Team B will travel to team A. The winner wins wild card one. The loser will go to team C. The winner of that game wins wild card two. After those 2 games, wild card teams one and two will play each other in the wild card round . Can be an" A\B rematch". Question[edit]

The team with the best record in the final 82 games of the season (providing the game added is not between the tied teams), extending backward until the tie is broken (since teams in the same division play each other as many as 19 times, this step is guaranteed to break the tie. Interleague games are skipped and ignored in this process.)

Why does this step guaranteed break the tie?

For example 2 teams (call it A and B) from 2 different divisions are tied. Suppose A and B split their series. Suppose A and B won every game against other teams. Then wouldn't both teams have a 100% record in all cases no matter how many games it is gone back (since games against each other is not included)? 24.212.195.135 (talk) 03:48, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
