How much more reliable a source for current news is there than the Wall Street Journal???

-Mokeni (talk) 15:36, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WSJ's Speakeasy blog did a detailed piece on the phenomenon yesterday: http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/03/24/kenya-launches-countrys-first-viral-music-video/ . More background from a leading Kenyan blog: http://mwanamishale.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/the-return-of-makmende/ . My take on the phenomenon and the question on whether Wikipedia should include a Makmende article: http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/2010/03/24/makmendes-so-huge-he-cant-fit-in-wikipedia/

Basically, this is an internet meme/phenomenon article. While not as widespread as memes like Chuck Norris Facts or Numa Numa, this has become a major phenomenon in the Kenyan internet. As such, it's notable and as well documented as any meme I've seen a week into its existence.

It looks like this article may actually survive this time, thanks to the WSJ article.

What a shame that it took this long to get it to stick. Thanks to Ethan for the writeup, but thanks to Kenyans for persevering and reminding the editors that Wikipedia is The Free Encyclopedia, not just "the encyclopedia that the editors narrowly think it should be" that we can all participate on. 208.88.67.138 (talk) 22:19, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Origins of the Name Makmende[edit]

There is some suggestions that the name Makmende came from the Phrase "Make My Day" The comments from http://mwanamishale.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/the-return-of-makmende/ are my sources.

Just wondering, how long does it have to take a kenyan to convince the world, twice as long as it took Avator, Superman etc to get here???? Oh plese C'Mon!! Peris Wanjuki —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.215.225.2 (talk) 08:00, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The name MackMende is very interesting. They say that this hype came around the '90s but I cant seem to remember hearing kids those days mention it! However, the craze it has evoked from that generation is great! Personnaly, I dont see why this page has been marked for deletion! There is no sexist, politics, terrorism, fanatism or any of that! Just a character in a funny music video??? Surely, this is Third World blackout by the west and the belief nothing good can come out of Africa! I say remove that Deletion warning, let Makmende live on... David Kahara, Nairobi Kenya. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.223.57.77 (talk) 07:13, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion of the Wikipedia "scandal"[edit]

I think part of what makes Makmende more notable was the repeated deletions of the page. Maybe tracking it's impact on the reputation of Wikipedia would make a for a good section. Yes we have the mention of the missing wikipedians but further discussion and maybe a summary of the article better serve those reading about makmende. It was also increase the visibility of the page of something that is really important to many Kenyans (applicable if someone were to visit Kenya). Makmende is like their superman. As someone from the Western world I think it would make this article much much better. 21:10, 26 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MuchoSandwich (talkcontribs)
