MOB Guardian[edit]

Woman overboard[edit]

According to the article, the same thing, since everything in the article other than the title itself refers to what to do to recover the "person". My understanding is that it's "Man overboard" if any person goes overboard, whether male or female, adult or child. But I'm not an old salt. I think the article should be explicit about it. I think we've reached a point where it's remarkable to use the word 'man' to refer to women as well. Such editing is not persmisssible on Wikipedia. It is intended as nothing more than to start inappropriate political strife. The mariner coventions use the term "man" and therefore that is the way it should be used here until as such time the international convention changes, which probably won't be for a long time. 24.182.207.10 (talk) 01:31, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Terminology[edit]

Terms such as deep beam reach are pretty obscure to non-mariners. Perhaps someone with some sailing knowledge could add explanations or links for some of the jargon?

"How to"[edit]

I just tagged this article with the "how to" template to indicate that it reads like an instruction guide or manual. What the article needs is much more content related to the historical development of the expression "Man overboard" and its use in the Age of Sail. Particular mention might be made of instances when the call was deliberately ignored, as it was aboard the Cutty Sark on at least one occasion when the crewmember so lost was considered "expensive" to retain and so was abandoned, despite the call. It isn't the purpose of Wikipedia to tell us what to do when someone calls "Man overboard", but to cover the use of the expression and its development and implementation (in English, at any rate). Disagree. I would find that this article meets an exception to the general rule of policy, in that it does not read as a "how to", but rather is information pertaining to what might be considered a "universal distress signal".
