I'm pretty sure SOME chelicerae are opposable and act as pincers.

New Mandibulata subphylum[edit]

If Chelicerata get their own article, I think Mandibulata should as well to encompass the crustaceas, myripodas, and insectas. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.128.125 (talk) 20:09, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tetraconata and Myriochelata are here to stay[edit]

As of April 2008, it seems most probable that (Hexopoda + Crustacea) will be paired off against (Chelicerata (with Pycnogonida) + Myriopoda). The group that would unite myriopods (centipeds and millipeds) with hexopods (to the exclusion of chelicerates) was not recovered in moleclar studies.

This means that Mandibulata is out, as a discarded hypothesis, but we should not worry. The Arthropoda surely have more surprises in store for us.--Wloveral (talk) 04:41, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some recent molecular studies have supported Mandibulata instead of Myriochelata/Paradoxopoda.[1][2] The matter may not be finally settled, but Mandibulata is a strong contender as a clade.

Categories[edit]

This is in Category:Arthropod anatomy, but what about a "mouth" related category, e.g. Category:Mouth? Or is that just for humans and close-ish relatives? Richard001 (talk) 23:00, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Separate Mandibulata and Mandible articles?[edit]

It seems unusual to have a major taxon (Mandibulata) combined with an article about an anatomical feature (arthropod mandibles). If we have enough information about mandibles to warrant its own article, I think we should separate the text about mandibulates into a separate article about that taxon, especially since Mandibulata has received new support from molecular phylogeny. Does anyone object?

The articles were separated. Yet the current one might be merged with mandible (insect). And the above discussion now belongs to the Mandibulata article. Mo5b (talk) 18:19, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
