Number of G1 wins[edit]

This article has Manikato accredited with 21 Group 1 wins "by todays standards".
However Manikato is usually attributed with 11 Group 1 wins.

1979 Futurity Stakes
1979 Doncaster Handicap
1979 Rothmans 100,000 (Doomben 10,000)
1980 Futurity Stakes
1980 George Ryder Stakes
1981 Futurity Stakes
1983 Futurity Stakes

The William Reid Stakes / Australia Stakes that Manikato won 5 times (1979 - 1983) was not given Group 1 status until 1987 and is listed in the Austrlian Stud Book as Group 2 in 4 of Manikato's wins 1980 to 1983 inclusive.

The C F Orr Stakes that Manikato won 3 times (1979 - 1981) was not given Group 1 status until 1993 and is listed in the Austrlian Stud Book as Group 2 in 1980 onwards.

The Freeway Stakes (later Manikato Stakes that Manikato won twice ( times (1979, 1982) was not given Group 1 status until 1989 and is listed in the Austrlian Stud Book as a Group 2 in both Manikatos wins.

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Manikato/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

I would lose the bit about " descendant of Nearco "....I mean something like 80% or more of the world's thoroughbreds descend from Nearco, so such a description really doesn't tell us anything useful. Besides, while he certainly have Nearco in his pedigree it is a relatively minor incidence - x 4 generations back on his mum's side.

Perhaps a more visual description eg, ' A barrel chested chestnut ...' might be better than the not very relevant Nearco reference.

Great to see an article on the champ.
