ÂHistorically, 10ks have not been considered marathon swims. The marathon swimming community has historically reserved the descriptor "marathon swim" as anything 25km or over.

Penny Lee Dean's "Open Water Swimming" describes: "Long distance swimming is any distance from 1.5K (about 1 mile) to 25 K (16 miles). Marathon swimming is all swims over 25k (16 miles) or a swim lasting over 5 hours." (page 2, copyright 1998)

The "10k= a marathon swim" is a FINA thing, and FINA only hit the scene post 2000. The Channel Swimming Association, however, has been around since 1927.

It is correct that historically swims of 10 kilometers have not been considered marathon swims. However, FINA redefined its definition of marathon swimming to be any swim of at least 10 kilometers. To support this definition, FINA has defined its global professional 10-kilometer swim circuit as the FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup.

FINA has been around since 1907 and is the acknowledged governing body of aquatics (pool swimming, open water swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming). All countries that participate in the Olympics and World Swimming Championships acknowledge FINA's leadership and governance of these aquatic disciplines.

That being said, the various local governing bodies around the world (e.g., Channel Swimming Association, Irish Long Distance Swimming Association, Catalina Channel Swimming Federation and the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame) define marathon swimming and long-distance swimming differently.

Like many rules and regulations in other sports, the sport of open water swimming is evolving.

In the course of re-defining marathon swimming, a worldwide panel of experts concluded that if marathon running is defined as 42 kilometers and takes the world's best runners a little over 2 hours to complete, then long distance swimming can be popularly and correctly defined as marathon swimming because it takes the world's best swimmers around 2 hours to complete (depending on the course and the water conditions). This is, of course, in contradiction with Penny Lee Dean's widely-read book of 1998.

Organizations[edit]

First world association for marathon swimming (in open water ) was Fédération Internationale de Natation Longue Distance founded in 1954. In 1963 it is divided into two that existed until 1970is: International Long Distance Swimming Federation (ILDSF) and World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation (WPMSF), both of which organized their own world championships.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.149.61.151 (talk) 16:16, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is also Marathon Swimmers Federation (MSF). What is its position in FINA. 213.149.61.151 (talk) 16:29, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
