Because it isn't a tradition, it's a decision each married person makes. She chose not to take his surname. cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 12:31, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Besides which, calling her "Mrs. David" would be very confusing considering that:

• she's married to Prof. Glyn Davis;
• she has a Ph.D. that entitles her to be addressed as "Dr." (as a minimum) for life, while her current position apparently entitles her to be addressed as "Prof." while in this role.

Nevertheless I disagree with hamiltonstone — there is indeed a "tradition" ...but it is not a universally observed tradition (especially in current times), and it is not the only tradition.

Islamophobic

The Islamic room thing was an Internal RMIT issue. I hardly think its at all appropriate to assume that Margaret herself was wholly responsible and is therefore Islamophobic. If its that much of an issue it should be on an RMIT page, not here. The reference used doesn't even mention Margaret Gardner at all. GSPT1 (talk) 04:58, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

I think this is too extreme for wikipedia... shouldn't a balanced view be presented if necessary. I will be removing this material and looking at relocating it to the RMIT page. It is inappropriate here, particularly as it is unrelated to Gardner as an individual - her only connection is as VC, and would only be notable with regard to her if she had made notable, third-party referenced interventions that went beyond her administrative role as VC. I have removed this material (again, as it turns out - someone else's attempt has already been reverted). It has already been inserted (by the same editor) into the RMIT page. That is the appropriate place for any debate / POV balancing about this material. It should not be duplicated here. It simply does not relate to the biography of this individual in a relevant way - a fact demonstrated by the limited reference in the text to Prof. Gardner. I have removed a different re-insertion of this kind of material - again. This is, at most, material that should be covered on the RMIT page. I also read the reference which did not mention Gardner by name. To not only place this text on Gardner's page rather than RMIT, but then to call her racist on the strength of an article that does not make that claim, shows serious bias, not to mention being in violation of WP policy re biographies of living persons, which states in part:

"Biographies of living persons must be written conservatively, with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid paper; it is not our job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives. The possibility of harm to living subjects is one of the important factors to be considered when exercising editorial judgment."

Can I urge other editors to deal with this issue, from a neutral perspective, on the RMIT page only? Cheers.hamiltonstone (talk) 01:10, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Wiki Project Women & opening

Hello Wikipedians. I am a representative of Monash University, and would be interested in helping supply additional content suggestions for this page. Notably, as part of the Wiki Project Women, Professor Gardner's page would be a worthy one to polish. Thanks for your consideration.

As such, perhaps the opening paragraph could mention that she was the first female appointed as VC of Monash? Something like:

Margaret Elaine Gardner AO (born 19 January 1954) is an Australian academic who is the current President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, the first woman to serve in the role. She has held this position since 2014<ref>, and in May 2018 was reappointed for a second term<ref>.

Update to Professor Gardner's image and title

As a representative of Monash University, I would like to propose two updates to the profile of Professor Gardner.

1. We have a more recent image of Professor Gardner (taken in 2022) that can replace the one currently used (taken in 2017). The image can be found at https://www.monash.edu/__data/assets/image/0011/3295532/margaret-gardner-2022.jpg

2. Professor Gardner's full title is 'President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University'. This could replace the title that appears under the image.
