Charity

I think they should include his charity work he and his wife, Pam Dawber, are involved in. He does a charity event every year called the Mark Harmon Celebrity Weekend, in Oklahoma. It is for the Ronald Mcdonald House and for some other childrens charities, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. They mention nothing of any of his charity works. As much time as he and his wife give to kids, I believe this should be mentioned.RedneckBella (talk) 21:43, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Military service, or lack

Although the Vietnam War was raging during the years he was in college, Harmon did not serve in the military.

I'm not sure what this sentence is trying to convey or imply. Harmon was too young to be drafted during the worst of the war, and he was in college under (I assume) a perfectly valid student deferment during the time it was winding down. He wouldn't even have been eligible for the draft until 1973, by which time we were just about out of Vietnam. Cranston Lamont (talk) 01:29, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

But that's just an assumption. Harmon was clearly not too young to be drafted; millions were drafted just his age. Combat operations didn't end in Vietnam until the end of March 1973 and the US didn't really get out until it had to in 1975.

So what the comment above was intended to convey, and imply, was that the article is silent about how Harmon -- a good athlete -- managed to avoid military service in the biggest war of his lifetime. Perhaps he had a knee injury, or was color blind, or whatever, but a healthy young man had to take some affirmative steps, or get a safe lottery number, to avoid service. The article simply ignores the historical context of the biggest event in America of the late 1960s and early 1970s (Vietnam). Meanwhile, Harmon, like Stallone and many others, went on to portray themselves as tough, macho, action heroes, so there's also an element of hypocrisy. The first draft lottery in 1969 applied to men born in the years 1944-1950 and was effective for 1970. Since Mark Harmon was born in 1951, the 1970 lottery would have affected him but, as a full-time college student, he had a deferment until graduation. Selective Service System: History & Records states "Before Congress made improvements to the draft in 1971, a man could qualify for a student deferment if he could show he was a full-time student making satisfactory progress toward a degree." Also "The last man inducted entered the Army on June 30, 1973." (https://www.sss.gov/VIET.HTM). Maybe the hypocricy rests with someone trying to saddle someone else with historical guilt involving a controversial military "police action," an undeclared "war." I lived through that period, as well, and if Harmon had an adequate grade-point, by the time he would have been called, it was over. You are reaching. Let it go, already. And why is it hypocritical for any actor to play a warrior, as well as any other role? A gay actor is not hypocritical to play a straight person. A straight actor is not hypocritical to play a homosexual. I'm sure there are people who can't cook who play great chefs, and I have observed MANY play the role of a musician, when it is obvious they can't play a note, or carry a tune. Grandfather

"Harmon was born in Burbank, California. His father was University of Michigan football All-American and Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon, and his mother is actress Elyse Knox, the daughter of World War II Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox"

On the page for Frank Knox, it explicitly states that he is not the father of Elyse Knox and therefore not Mark Harmon's grandfather, but that comment is uncited. Since there is no citation for that fact on this page, either, I've marked both with "citation needed." Thorswitch (talk) 23:26, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I've followed up by doing the research. Elyse Knox is NOT the daughter of Frank Knox. This unfounded rumor appears to be of fairly recent origin, as there are no records of any connection between the two in newspaper or internet archives before about 1990, that I can find. Frank Knox's obituaries list survivors, none of whom is a daughter. And even the sources claiming the relationship often note that Elyse Knox was born with the family name "Kornbrath." According to the U.S. Census and various publications from the 1940s, including Boxoffice Magazine, Elyse Knox was born Elsie Lillian Kornbrath to Frederick and Elizabeth Kornbrath of Hartford, Connecticut. I've changed all the pertinent articles and cited each change. This should resolve it, except for the hundreds of other websites that still make the claim. anyone know why there is no entry in the TV section for his episodes on JAG ? (there is clearly an entry for The_West_Wing_(TV_series))

is there a delimiting factor such as number of episodes which would have prevented this from being included in the listing?

secondly i would like to include the reference about him from The Family Guy - any comments please post just let me say that it does not need to be in a trivia section, but should perhaps be included in his career section for someone to be mentioned in this way is not trivial, it is a big thing and i feel should be included as a tribute to someone reaching the top of the tree of the acting profession

most notable for the role of Billy Wyatt?

What are the facts behind this statement? Was Harmon previously married to a sibling of Ricky Nelson? Was one of his siblings previously married to Ricky Nelson?

I have also used [[19xx in film|19xx]] tags for the years of the films, since [[19xx]] has little encyclopedic value.

I feel that we should link the terms Special agent and Emmy Award in the lead section.
