Contested deletion[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because Marty Moe is a top business executive in the US. I've added sources. --64.134.64.190 (talk) 02:41, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Expanded and updated draft[edit]

Hello. On behalf of Vox Media, I've drafted an expanded and improved Wikipedia article about Marty Moe for community review. I don't edit the main space because of my conflict of interest, as I am working on behalf of Vox as part of my work at Beutler Ink, so I'm looking for volunteer editors to review this draft and implement proposed content appropriately. The existing Wikipedia article has a few problems:

  • His various roles are mentioned minimally ("President of Vox Media", "co-founder of The Verge", "executive at AOL", "adviser to ... Lawrence H. Summers", "attorney at Skadden Arps"), offering almost no detail about his work or its significance
  • The current article is very short and bombarded with inline citations (there are 15 citations for 6 sentences of content)
  • The current article does not mention his role as executive producer of 3 series
  • Reference #5 directs readers to Edelman's website; Reference #14 directs readers to the Vox Media website

I've worked to address these issues and provide a more complete overview of his early life and education, career, and personal life, using appropriate sourcing and placing inline citations appropriately. The proposed draft describes his various roles in more detail, includes recognition received for his work by notable publications, and adds mention of his role as executive producer of 3 series. I've used neutral wording, and none of the claims are particularly contentious. Mr. Moe and Vox Media have confirmed the accuracy of this draft.

I hope editors will agree this draft is a vast improvement over the existing article. Again, I'm seeking a volunteer to copy over markup appropriately. @AmericanAir88: I'm curious if you'd be willing to review this short draft, since you assisted with the Jim Bankoff article. I'm happy to answer questions or concerns here or on my user talk page. Thank you! Inkian Jason (talk) 19:42, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Inkian Jason: I will address this but I am currently busy with work and a FAN. AmericanAir88(talk) 22:05, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@AmericanAir88: Thanks for taking a look when you have a moment. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:46, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Pinging you as well, in case you're available to review the proposed draft, since you've worked on other Vox-related edit requests. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 20:04, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Inkian Jason: Sorry for the delay, I can take a look at the draft shortly. Please remind me in case I forget. Lordtobi () 14:54, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thanks for offering to help. The article is not long and shouldn't take too long to review. I'll ping later next week if needed. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:57, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I forgot, haha. To be completely honest, I'm not too familiar with BLP articles, but this is what I noticed:
  • In the lead, per WP:LEGALNAME, the nickname should be omitted. It is implicit through the article title.
  • "currently" should be removed as the article represents the current state in either way.
  • It says there that he worked for SB Nation, which rebranded as Vox Media, but if I understand correctly, SB Nation is one website of SportsBlogs Inc., and SportsBlogs Inc. rebranded as Vox Media. As context you could say something like "...SB Nation parent company SportsBlogs, which rebranded..." or "...SB Nation, which's parent company, SportsBlogs, rebranded..." depending on which is correct.
  • Try to establish a more chronological timeline, stating Skadden and Summerrs first, then AOL, then SportsBlogs.
  • Exchange "Education" with "Early life and education", as the section also covers his parents.
  • Mention here, as introduction to the body, his full name.
  • I added "Martin Troen Moe" to the first sentence of the body. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:56, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The date he joined AOL and the role he served there can be merged into one sentence.
  • "He resigned in August 2010, effective that October," — I assume he only announced his resignation in August, if that is the case you could leave out the August part, the actual resignation is the important part. You can also leave out the duration of his employment, as this usually only makes sense if the two sentences are seperated by several sections of corporate history on company articles, not in practically adjacent sentences.
  • For chronology, also move the sentence of what he did at AOL to before he left the company.
  • Good suggestion. I changed the order of sentences. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:56, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the third paragraph, you have two sentences saying how he co-founded The Vergem another saying that The Verge was founded when SB rebranded. Try rearranging the sentences so that is mentioned first that SB rebranded, Moe and Topolsky founded Verge, Moe and Topolsky receive Business Insider's recognition for that foundation, and then that Polygon is founded through Moe.
  • In "once again", remove the "once".
  • "Moe has served as executive producer for Foul Play, a documentary series developed by the business in conjunction with SB Nation and Verizon Communications' go90 platform, premiering in 2018."—For proper tensing, remove the "has".
  • "Moe was married to Lisel Loy, ..." the sources presented do not imply that they are no longer maried, but to avoid confusion (if they are not married anymore), you could simply say when they married (June 1998 if I got that right) instead of presenting any current state.
  • I changed "Moe was married to Lisel Lo" to "Moe married Lisel Lo". Inkian Jason (talk) 15:56, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Change "External links" to "Further reading", as the section does not include his personal/official site, but further editorial content on or with him.
Please notify me when you do the changes (you don't need to do one edit for every point I made), and I'll review it once more and overtake the changes into the article. Any opposition by people more familar with BLPs can still be made then. Lordtobi () 19:38, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: I believe I've address your concerns with this edit. Please let me know if you have any remaining concerns. Thank you for taking time to review this draft. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:56, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done; overtook the draft to the main page with some code tidy. In my cleanup request I also forgot to mention the use of DEFAULTSORT, so he is sorted as "Moe, Marty" in categories, which I added now. Cheers. Lordtobi () 16:19, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thank you very much for your thorough review and help, once again. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:19, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to add image to infobox[edit]

I've uploaded a photograph and submitted an OTRS ticket for File:Marty Moe, Vox Media, September 2018.jpg, which has already been approved. Is someone willing to add this image to the infobox on my behalf? @Lordtobi: I am pinging you since you helped with the draft. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 21:03, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Inkian Jason,  Done. Lordtobi () 07:04, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thank you! I've submitted a similar request at Jim Bankoff. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:14, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request with two minor changes[edit]

Hello! I am back with a request with two minor changes:

1. I propose replacing the sentence "He later worked for AOL, before joining SB Nation, which's parent company, SportsBlogs, rebranded as Vox Media in 2011." with "He later worked for AOL before joining SportsBlogs Inc., which rebranded as Vox Media in 2011." This is simpler wording.

2. Moe was actually married in 1998, not 1988. The "Personal life" section should be corrected as such.

@Lordtobi: Pinging you, since you helped with the above request. Thank you! Inkian Jason (talk) 20:47, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Lordtobi () 21:24, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thank you! Does "which rebranded as Vox Media after his arrival in 2011" seem like even better wording? I will say, coverage of the company's early history is a bit confusing, so this clarification might help give readers insight into the early history timeline. Thanks, Inkian Jason (talk) 21:38, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Inkian Jason, I assume you meant to outline that the rebrand happened after he joined the company, because the lead does not say when he joined it. For simplicity's sake I added "later". Lordtobi () 08:24, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
