Towards the bottom, I'm not so sure that "received criticism on the Internet" is noteworthy. Couldn't that statement describe just about anything? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.70.143.66 (talk) 20:16, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Impartiality, politicization

Several sections in this article (most notably: "perhaps their most beautiful combination of words and music is found in the profound and harmoniously beautiful "When the Ship Comes In"; and " This uniquely beautiful-sounding singing group breaks the mold politically, supporting liberal causes while unabashedly and courageously supporting Israel.") are written with either subjectively-skewed characterizations or outright political statements. 00:45, 22 March 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.231.182.76 (talk)

Birth name

This source says the correct spelling of her middle name is 'Ellin' not 'Allin.' This fact should be double checked. http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mary_travers —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.224.57.157 (talk) 07:47, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Quotes

As Wikiquote doesn't have quotes for Mary Travers, and I don't have sources suitable for Wikiquote's current standards for citations, I think it would be appropriate to have a link to an outside page. However, as the best page I know of happens to be on my own quotation site, I'm not about to put the link in myself. (I've gotten in trouble for that before!) If other agree, I would encourage someone to add the following link to the External Links section:

2009 article

There is a debate at Talk:2009#Mary Travers as to whether or not she is sufficiently internationally notable to be included in the Deaths section. Please give your comments there, and / or expand this article to substantiate either viewpoint. Information yes (talk) 23:19, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Leukemia

This article states she was diagnosed in 2005; the Peter, Paul and Mary article states she was diagnosed in 2004. Which is the actual year? Information yes (talk) 23:29, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Recent death tag

Does this add anything? If something changes it changes. how do we help the reader by having this tag? Rich Farmbrough, 07:55, 17 September 2009 (UTC).

It does nothing, especially since the circumstances of her death are well reported. It should be removed. -- 66.30.220.239 (talk) 19:37, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Its a pretty standard boiler-plate wikipedia maintenance tag. What it means is that the page will receive lots of edits (it has received more edits in the past two days than in the previous two years) and its a call for other editors to come, verify and cleanup. A bot will automatically remove it in a couple of days.DavidRF (talk) 20:22, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
This standard boiler plate says nothing that is not already in the article, and there is no confusion about the circumstances of the death of the person this article is about. As such, the template is redundant and superfluous. -- Yellowdesk (talk) 01:07, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh. I'm sure it would have been removed by now. In most cases, such as this one, the tag is overkill, but the most egregious complaints about wikipedia have always had to deal with the changes to an article as news of a person's death is breaking (or in the worst cases when the person hasn't actually died). The more editors called in the better and that's what the tag is for. You're right though that the tag is mainly for editors and doesn't need to be so prominent for readers. DavidRF (talk) 03:55, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
It is standard practice for the tag to be present from when the subject's death is confirmed until 7 days after the death. An article such as this does need it, as it has had a much higher than usual number of views and edits in the last few days. It is not just the details of the death that are added / corrected / expanded upon in articles of the recently deceased. Many details of the subject's life are added or expanded upon after his / her death, due to media coverage of the subject and the amount of info in obituaries. The fact that the dead cannot sue for libel, and WP:BLP rules no longer apply to the subject, sometimes allow for more info to be added. This article will continue to be frequently edited over the next few days, which needs to be done - the article does not yet mention her funeral. Information yes (talk) 23:26, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

The template is optional and in this instance, superfluous, as it adds zero that is not already stated in the first sentence of the lede of the article, and there is no confusion or additional news to be related about the circumstances of her death, contrary to the template's indication that that may be a material item. -- Yellowdesk (talk) 23:35, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

As the tag says, 'the person's death and surrounding events'. The funeral is undoubtedly a surrounding event; the article does not yet mention it. It also lacks other important biographical info, including the start and end years of her first three marriages, and the names of her three ex-husbands. Information yes (talk) 23:10, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Such missing biographical information is simply typical for all wikipedia articles, and does not merit the optional {{recent death}} template, especially when there are not hundreds of edits, and especially when there is no confusion about the circumstances of death, and no funeral is the cause of death for the honored deceased. A funeral is merely news. The names of three of four of Ms. Travers's husbands are (or were) listed in a footnote. The "standard practice" you claim for the template, is actually and merely the indication on the template's documentation that the template will definitely be removed after seven days, not that the template is mandatory or even appropriate for all and every article about a recently deceased indivdual.

Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move per request. Barring the manifestly improper, moving is the default for requested moves even with little or no participation since boldness allows moves without discussion. Here, though only a Google web search was provided as evidence, and only of the name alone rather than with delimiters to target each for comparison, I have performed appropriate searches of Google Books and News and reviewed the results, which support the request. See, e.g. the results of [1] vs. [2] & [3], and [4] vs. [5] & [6]. Moreover, the Québécois singer is far better known by her nickname, per sources found.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:40, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Mary Travers (singer)Mary Travers — The singer is the primary individual of the name "Mary Travers"; easily better known by this name on its own than Mary Rose-Anna Travers (better known as La Bolduc, French-Canadian singer) and Mary Travers (journalist). There are 14 different language versions of this article, and googling "Mary Travers" shows hits almost exclusively referring to this article. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 00:31, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Date of birth?

The article gives birth and death dates as November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009, but later says she died at 72 (citing the New York Times). Can somebody determine which of these is correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.190.18.204 (talk) 05:46, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Photo needed

Can we get a photo for the article? Or better yet, one of her and the band. --RyanTee82 (talk) 05:40, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

It would better to use a photo of her as most of us remember her during the prime of her career -- with bangs almost to her eyes and long blonde tresses. Casey (talk) 02:58, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
