Sponsorship[edit]

I believe that the termination of his sponsorship by Nike, and his subsequent signing by Skechers deserves to be mentioned, as it received significant media attention.

Untitled[edit]

To the person who wrote that de Lima had an 'altercation' with Cornelius Horan: that is an inaccurate description of the event. By no accounts did de Lima fight Horan. Horan ran out and pushed him into the crowds at the side of the road, until Horan was removed from de Lima by a large spectator. Here is supplementary evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx1TDFV5Vhk . There are print accounts as well.

I changed this from "first American citizen" to "first American" to win the marathon. Citizen is redundant. If you are an American, it is because you have American citizenship. The tack on of "citizen" in this context seems to be a way to signify that Meb was not born in the US. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sohomews (talkcontribs) 19:56, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Mebrahtom Keflezighi.jpg[edit]

Image:Mebrahtom Keflezighi.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

two articles that could be great refs for expansion[edit]

Sports Illustrated profile from 2005,

No time for me now. I have to get 13+ miles in today, so I'm getting ready to go. Just waiting for the Charger game to end. 21-13 Chargers in the 4th quarter now.--Jojhutton (talk) 23:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name meaning taken from article, it was commented out[edit]

Tigrinya "their [his parents'] light, blessed by the Sovereign "< The root Ge'ez word "Kifle", in this context, as in "KifleIzgi", "KifleMariam", "KifleHawariat",etc., broadly implies that the person has been acknowledged to be a member of those blessed to be in the camp of "Izgi" (the Sovereign), or "Mariam" (St. Mary) or "Hawariat" (the Apostles). Hence, "blessed by" is the rational translation. >;

Infobox[edit]

says he was born in asmara, eritrea ("now asmara, eritrea"). first one needs to be changed to ethiopia or some version of "disputed territory" etc., similar to the regular section.

it actually reads "Derg" on the hover, which makes it even odder. derg was the regime; i don't think anyone really used it as a geographical term. 209.172.25.49 (talk) 23:00, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The bottom line is, disputed or not, Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia and did not gain independence until 1991. So he was really born in Ethiopia. Norum 23:54, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Though that may be true, and I mistakenly thought I had a source that quoted him saying he was from Ethiopia (see Edit warring below), the overwhelming majority of sources appear to say he is 'from' Eritrea. Wp:Verifiability, not truth. The change to Ethiopia appears to be recent, but hard to be sure without checking every edit. --220 of Borg 10:44, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This source here 'hedges its bets' and says "Keflezighi was born in Ethiopia and brought up in war-torn Eritrea." I give up! :-\ --220 of Borg 11:15, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

American[edit]

Shouldn't he be listed as Ethiopian American or Eritrean American?Correctron (talk) 08:05, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Piet.Wijker (talk) 10:04, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because he's not originally from the United States.Correctron (talk) 10:13, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
He is an American citizen is why moving here when he was 10 years old. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 14:25, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This could be a long talk, if you ask me. To be honest, who is originally from the United States, apart from the Indians? Piet.Wijker (talk) 15:15, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the original Americans would be the white guys. Natives existed pre-America. The first Americans were the white guys that created America. Also, if you notice, ever other naturalized American is listed as (insert place) American.Correctron (talk) 23:21, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

He was 12 when he arrived in the USA, not 10. Norum 01:59, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring: Ethiopia/Eritrea and Asmara/Addis Ababa[edit]

There is slow edit warring going on over whether he was Eritrean or Ethiopian. Possibly complicated by a name change for where he came from, Eritrea having achieved independence from Ethiopia. This New York Times source [2] says he moved to Italy from Eritrea. It does NOT say (though implied) he was of Eritrean nationality, as seems to be the intention. A CNN source [3] quotes him as saying:

"I was born in Ethiopia, raised in Oklahoma and Colorado, and ended up in Brooklyn, New York"

That should settle it.- (Maybe) -220 of Borg 07:59, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

BIG oops, I totally misread that page, the quote is from the author of the article not Keflezighi! Comment Struck out! --220 of Borg 10:26, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK I understand the timing of Ethiopia being the government of administration of the area now known as Eritrea in 1975, the time of his birth, or even necessarily about 1987, Eritrea becoming independent in 1991. But how did his place of birth get converted from Asmara to Addis Ababa? How is that (now) . . . Those are two different capital cities of now two current countries. Somebody please show a source or I will revert back to the place of birth that has always been listed for him, Asmara, as referenced [4] from his Olympic medal almost 10 years ago. Trackinfo (talk) 08:44, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK just fixed as I wrote.Trackinfo (talk) 08:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, it was me who fixed that. I also restored a short explanatory note, that an IP editor had removed, saying he was from "a part of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia that is now in" Eritrea. The town was changed here, by an Irish IP editor, they had the Ethiopian bit right, but the source makes no mention of town of birth. I'll add a cite for his town of birth, if I'm not beaten to it.--220 of Borg 09:31, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cite for Asmara added. However, I note that the same source says, in full, "Asmara, Maekel, Eritrea", not Ethiopia, where Keflezighi himself is quoted as saying he was from. The name change is a real pain, as source info appears to be based on what the area was officially called at the time of the Olympics, not at birth. See also birthplaces--220 of Borg 09:58, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
comment Eritrea did not gain independence from Ethiopia until 20 years after he was born. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.75.214.124 (talk) 00:32, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Point noted, though I was aware of it. However, I think an Eritrean may feel somewhat differently. Though born in Ethiopia, or a place that was 'Officially' in Ethiopia then, they may still regard themselves now as Eritrean (or ex Eritrean or Eritrean-American). Civil wars tend to create strong feelings, which may be what we are seeing here, both countries are trying to claim Keflezighi as 'theirs'. (Like Mel Gibson born in USA, moved to Oz age 12, but we generally regard him as 'totally' Australian.) One source I found said Keflezighi wore a USA flag badge, next to an Eritrean flag badge. Just as people can 'self identify' as gay, or whatever, If Keflezighi says "I was born in Eritrea", the technicalities of nationhood may well be irrelevant. Admit I don't know the exact Wikipedia policy on this, but wouldn't be surprised if what the person says goes in a case like this. If it's demonstrably untrue though, reliable sources would determine the issue, people do lie about their age (for example) after all. --220 of Borg 01:30, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

this is silly; he may well say "i was born in eritrea" just as i say "i was born in california". that doesn't confer some magical statehood to the place 20 years before it actually got it. your mel gibson example even FURTHER undermines the argument, seeing as his entry clearly states he was born in the US. no sort of "honorary" australia there, no matter HOW people perceive him.

keflezighi was born in ethiopia, was an ethiopian national, and had an ethiopian passport right up to the day he left. this isn't even a line call -- he wasn't even THERE when eritrea achieved statehood!

what's wrong with the original plan, to write "asmara, ethiopia (now asmara, eritrea)"? i was the first one to complain (above), but only b/c both halves mistakenly said "eritrea" [i.e. "A (now A)"] -- which made no sense semantically -- and b/c the hover linked to yet a THIRD ("derg") entry. but i approved of the intent 100%.

i say it again: "asmara, ethiopia (now asmara, eritrea)". that is the only logical option here.

altho...98% of hong kong celebs are in a similar boat, and their entries mostly just say "hong kong". so i suppose you could just put "asmara" and leave it to the reader to go to THAT page for further details of who owned what when. (rly don't like this idea, but it seems to prevail for hong kong entries). 209.172.25.29 (talk) 09:26, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ethiopia[edit]

This should refer to Ethiopia not Eritrea just like every other instance. Hockey players are listed under USSR not their current territories. Same applies to everyone. LordAtlas (talk) 06:19, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
