Needs complete rewrite from independent sources[edit]

This article should be rewritten from secondary or tertiary sources, and some of those sources need to be independent of the subject matter. Primary sources should only be used for expounding on details mentioned by the other sources. --Ronz (talk) 04:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns from Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council[edit]

To Whom It May Concern,

I am a representative from Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), which this organisation is the official government agency to handle Malaysia medical tourism information available online.

Looking at the information published in Wikipedia about Malaysia medical tourism, the information is incorrect and inaccurate. As a government agency, MHTC needs to ensure the information, especially statistics are not wrongly reported. In order to revise the information (I do not know who inputted the initial information. Kindly note that information published in Wikipedia can be by anybody. Thus, the most trustable information should be from the official provider itself, which is an organisation in this case.

mhtc.org.my and medicaltourism.com.my are the official governmental websites for Malaysia medical tourism. Thus, information published in these websites are deemed to be trustable and should not be viewed as promotional. Example, if we need to provide information about the the latest economic statistics, you would want to reference to World Bank website.

Kindly note that shall the information persists to be in the current state, as a last option, MHTC will need to publish in its websites that the information available in Wikipedia on Malaysia medical tourism is deemed to be incorrect and inaccurate. The reference websites used to support the information in Wikipedia disagree with the information published as it does not reflect the truth of the medical tourism industry in Malaysia.

Medical tourism in Malaysia is ranked in the top five destinations for health tourism.^[1]

Chee (2007) reported that the Ministry of Health Malaysia had set up the National Committee for the Promotion of Medical and Health Tourism in January 1998 in an effort to develop medical tourism in Malaysia.^[2] According to Wong and Musa (2012), the function was later reassigned to a newly Cabinet approved agency, the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC).^[3]

Malaysia is well on its way to develop itself as a medical tourism hub. Majority of the foreign patients seeking medical treatments in Malaysia are from Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and West Asia (Frost & Sullivan, 2010; UNESCAP, 2007).^[4] ^[5]According to the MHTC's official portal, Malaysia received more than 670,000 patients from around the globe in 2012. ^[6] While Malaysia has a national accreditation healthcare scheme (MSQH), many of Malaysia's hospitals are currently firmly on the way to achieving international healthcare accreditation such as the JCI.

Malaysian hospitals such Gleneagles Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, International Specialist Eye Centre, and Penang Adventist Hospital are among the JCI accredited medical facilities. The Ministry of Health has launched a medical tourism page that provides medical tourism information access to general public.^[1]

Note on sources[edit]

The relevant policies/guidelines/essays include WP:NOT (especially WP:SOAP), WP:V, WP:RS, WP:OR, WP:NPOV, and WP:IS. There's a great deal written on why and how we prevent Wikipedia from becoming a venue for promotion, and it's more than a little overwhelming to try to read it all, let alone work from it. However, editors can't go too far wrong when article are written mostly from reliable sources that are independent of the subject matter and not primary sources.

So, announcements about information tangential to the article topic, from organizations whose purpose is to promote the subject, shouldn't be used as sources at all as for this. --Ronz (talk) 16:42, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify, I'm an independent scholar who has studied medical tourism to Malaysia for the last decade. I have no affiliations/conflicts of interest with the bodies promoting and developing medical tourism in Malaysia. Yesterday I realised that the wiki for the topic was really underdeveloped so I added a lot of information based on not only primary but also independent secondary sources. Happy to make whatever edits are necessary to ensure that the posting fits the guidelines -- this is my first wiki experience so I'm learning. Meg ormond (talk) 09:57, 3 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
