A note[edit]

This report from a workshop on meibomian glad dysfunction is pretty interesting. For example, they suggest that omega-3 supplementation doesn't improve gland dysfunction. A number of optometrists recommend omega-3 for improving dry eye, but of course, that assumes the glands draw it from the blood rather than making it. This is from 2011, but if this is still the general consensus it would be good for the article.

Therefore, it is most likely that all the lipids secreted by the meibomian glands are synthesized by the gland and we must understand fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis, the key enzymes involved in these pathways, and in which cellular compartments they are located.
