Origin[edit]

Jack Holt is credited with the first Merlin Rocket design along with Beecher Moore. This needs some explanation which I am not competent to give. My understanding was that the Merlin and The Rocket were two separate designs which both happened to be fourteen feet long. Neither was recognized as a national class and the relevant authority, I guess the Royal Yachting Association, re-drafted the rules so as to include both designs in one class which was then recognized as the National Merlin Rocket. This is why the boats which I knew around 1960, were of three distinct sorts, the Merlins, the Rockets and the Merlin Rockets. I think Jack Holt and Beecher Moore were responsible for the original, quite separate designs and that Jack Holt at least, later, also designed Merlin Rockets. (RJP 10:39, 21 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]
