Is this notable?[edit]

I've added the notability tag to this article because I think the topic fails WP:GNG The article came to my attention because it got linked to in a bunch of pages on my watchlist and I wasn't familiar with it, so I looked around to see if I could find anything. None of the references in the article seem to show its notability (they seem to fall under three categories: 1) fan sites which should be considered reliable sources; 2) some links to the NAFC website which don't seem to work and aren't really independent; and 3) articles from the Advertiser, who are the people that give the award. I did a brief search for more references that I could add, but it was more of the same. The only mentions on reliable independent sources that I could find were brief mentions e.g., "In between there have been media awards for Boak, including the Merv Agars Medal at The Advertiser and the Max Basheer Medal at radio FIVEaa." from here, which I don't think constitutes the significant coverage required. Notifying @Thejoebloggsblog: as the main contributor to this article. OliveYouBean (talk) 04:31, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your analysis of the sources. It's a bit of a tricky situation since The Advertiser is very often used for referencing articles related to football in South Australia – but obviously that's not an option here. If no further sources emerge, there are a lot of possible merge targets (The Advertiser (Adelaide), Merv Agars, Australian rules football in South Australia, etc.) so I don't think deletion is warranted in any case. – Teratix 06:49, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Teratix. The high level of incompleteness here is a big telltale as well. If there isn't even a primary source available which lists all winners, let alone a secondary, I think it's difficult to argue that GNG can be met. (Worth noting that Herald Sun Player of the Year has much the same inherent issues as the Merv Agars, in that being a single newspaper's award, all of the references are primary or passing. Better completeness is the only thing in its favour comparatively, with all years filled in until 2019, after which nobody seems to have remembered to update it) Aspirex (talk) 22:47, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unless something else comes up in the next little while I'm going to go ahead and merge this with The Advertiser (Adelaide) since I think that makes the most sense. Really the only things that I think can go in that article are that it exists and that it's named after Merv Agars. (I'll also make the same suggestion at Herald Sun Player of the Year.) I would suggest deletion, to be honest. The parent newspapers' pages don't mention the awards and right now don't really have a place into which a mention of the awards could be easily merged. I don't think they're valid redirects. Merv Agars might be a valid redirect for his medal. Aspirex (talk) 01:01, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Given that this is stale, let's try an alternative proposal, with the target suggested by Aspirex, discussing on the Talk:Merv Agars page. Klbrain (talk) 10:08, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have redirected this title to Merv Agars. We already have a sentence on the topic there and the rest of what we had here was an incomplete list of winners which I don't think there was any benefit to listing at the Merv Agars article. Jenks24 (talk) 10:21, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
