Name change[edit]

Shouldn't we change the name to Metrobüs, the Turkish spelling? Since there is no such word as Metrobus and the official branding name is Metrobüs --Infestor (talk) 07:05, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree and I have done so. There is no such word as "metrobus" and Metrobüs can be used for quite different things in different cities around the world as a proper noun. Also, since no one calls Metrobüs Metrobus in Turkey, it makes no sense to use Metrobus in the main article. Esirgen (talk) 06:13, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The spelling used by the company on their english language web site is "metrobus" and that is what should be used in the English Wikipedia. Secondarywaltz (talk)

I guess that's fair but I don't agree with the stuff IETT have put on their Web site. They are using "metrobus" as an English word; although, there is no such word. Metrobüs is a proper noun and there is no harm in spelling it with the ü as a foreign word in English language, but I doubt the Web designers or media officials of IETT know so much about the English language. But you are right that IETT is using Metrobus instead of Metrobüs even on their Turkish page now. I guess they still want to make people believe that there is such a word "metrobus" in English language. I don't agree with the IETT's usage, but I'm OK with keeping the Wikipedia name as Metrobus to be consistent with the official transit agency. Esirgen (talk) 18:03, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally the only other bus system in the world that is BRT and uses a similar word seems to be the Mexico City Metrobús. Note that in Spanish autobús is used for bus as otobüs is used in Turkish, whereas autobus is not used very commonly in English. I guess officials in Mexico City and Istanbul had the same taste when they named their lines. Esirgen (talk) 18:19, 25 July 2009 (UTC) Corrected typo Esirgen (talk) 18:26, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both of your arguments make sense.--Infestor (talk) 19:20, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both. Please note that Metrobus (see this disambiguation page) is a very commonly used title for transit systems that serve the metropolitan area of a city and that Metrobüs is still a redirect to this article for users capable of doing that ü. I don't want to mess with the Mexican one because it was moved to Mexico City Metrobús and that disambiguates the article for those who are unaware of the subtle differences in spelling.
