Reggie's response to its reception

Reggie issued a response to Metroid: Other M's sales and its quality on Kotaku, mostly with him "trying to figure out" what went wrong with the game. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 00:58, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

I might not be able to start a full review today, but I will try to get to it tomorrow if not. I noted two flaws: it lacks the response from Nintendo (which I think is vital to show more than just sales reaction but their reaction to the criticisms it received), and it uses GoNintendo, which is not identified as a reliable source. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler!   • I noticed that the reception is somewhat light. I strongly advise adding a section that covers its pre-release reception - ie, reception from previews, hands-ons, E3 awards, etc. Some references to use: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] There are potentially many reliable sources that cover this game in and outside of previews; make sure to check reliable non-video game sources such as MSNBC and USA Today, both of which have their own video game staff members. This video game reliable sources search engine is your friend, too.
  • If possible, it would be advised to replace Siliconera with a reliable source (these sources can be found here). One good choice would be [andriasang.com Andriasang], which also covers Japan-only content (if it adequately replaces the content of course).
  • If possible, replace primary sources from Nintendo to reliable secondary sources that cover the recall information; in general, try to find sources that would help you to consolidate any statements that currently use multiple references to verify a statement.
  • It would be best to remove situational sources such as Joystiq; while acceptable for use in a Good article, Metroid: Other M is not a game that needs any source it can get, and Joystiq will definitely prevent it from becoming an FA in the end.
  • As a piece of advice for prose, make sure to avoid using "ing" words whenever possible; basically, for example, in the lead, you should use "features" instead of "featuring".
  • The lead should really represent the negative opinions more; while 79% is good for the average video game, going from how the average Metroid game usually scores >90 to <80 must have occurred for a reason.
  • I would recommend strengthening the fair use rationales for the two gameplay images; for example, the second gameplay image's rationale is to display the first person mechanic, but that's not really necessary now, is it? Neither fair use rationale argues for the need to demonstrate the game's visuals.
  • "Like other games in the Metroid series" should have a source.
  • Make sure that everything in the lead refers to something in the article body; the body makes no mention of what number release it is in the series, nor does it discuss when and where it was released.
  • Speaking of the numbering, technically, it is the 12th release if you mean unique games; however, at that point, it becomes contemptuous as to whether Metroid Prime Pinball qualifies as such, or if Metroid: Zero Mission qualifies since it's a retelling of another game. I think it would be best to either name it the 12th release of a Metroid game, which may be awkward because, if applied as a general guideline for game articles, could be unwieldy (imagine the numbering for a Mario game!) or simply not mention it at all.

Sales figures?

The lifetime worldwide total sale figures from VGChartz added on the article isn't technically reliable. Can anyone give a reason why is this needed? Hounder4 TALK LOG 09:59, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Removing and paraphrasing lenthy quotations as per WP:Overusing quotations

Abby Heppe's review recieved a quotation box, and TGO's review received a lengthy quotation in the reviews section. Both are overly long and put too much emphasis on one reviewer, giving the impression of a debate instead of an encyclopedic article. I propose to remove the quotation box and to leave out the lengthy "He concludes..." from the paragraph. -IsaacAA (talk) 11:12, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

NPD sales during September 2010

I found a little bit of info on sales figures for Other M. This one - reported by NPD Group - said that it sold around 173,000 units in North America during September 2010 (last year): "The second title we'd like to single out is Nintendo's Metroid: Other M, developed in conjunction with Team Ninja. Having moved only 173,000 units, the title serves to highlight the ongoing challenges in the Wii market, even for Nintendo itself." Fan Boycotts

Why aren't there any sites listed that are against the game its both boring and sexist so it needs to be mentioned. --58.7.111.155 (talk) 13:47, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

  1. I'm not aware of any boycotts. Can you provide some sources on them?
  2. As far as sexism goes, there is the quote: "G4 TV's Abbie Heppe considered a portrayal of Samus as "sexist"; she wrote that she "cannot possibly wield the amount of power she possesses unless directed to by a man", and found that her anxiety attack cannot be reconciled with her previous portrayals.[66]
  3. As far as being boring goes...you could add it if you have some reliable sources to back it up, but at this point, the criticisms already in the article are a lot more detailed and better thought out than just "boring"... Sergecross73 msg me 14:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Here's a link to an extremely well-thought article dissecting the writing of Metroid: Other M and why it's bad for the franchise. It brings up a lot of good points. When Other M first came out, many of the general criticisms were examined as separate entities with their own problems, but the writer here makes a note that if the complaints throughout the story are taken as a whole, the story isn't suffering from bad writing, it's suffering from a competent writer with some serious issues on what a healthy relationship is supposed to be and how this relationship devalues Samus as a hero and a person and even glorifies it. I'm surprised this article wasn't referenced here, because this article understands the game from a literary perspective, and since Sakamoto clearly wanted us to examine the story, an article that delves into the repercussions of the writing of Other M would be very beneficial to the page's negative reception portion. --50.193.239.113 (talk) 18:58, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Sales

Five years has passed, and neither Nintendo or NPD Group have releasing reliable sales numbers for this game. Looking through the custom search engine for reliable sources, the article from GameZone says that one million copies were sold by January 2012, but uses VGChartz as its reference. Per WP:VG/S#VGChartz, it's best not to use this source. I tried searching for reliable sources on updated figures, but no avail; so the sources that are already in the "Sales" section is all we can use. -- Hounder4 02:41, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Virtual Console releases. New consensus on the matter.

I have discovered multiple Wikipedia articles (such as Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time) that have the supposed Virtual Console release dates. I would like a consensus on the matter of adding Virtual Console releases and references to them. They ARE typically stated in this list. Those other articles are wrong. See the template documentation at Template:Infobox video game. This should not be discussed at Metroid: Other M, but at WT:VG if you want to change the consensus. -- ferret (talk) 18:42, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
