Deletion requested for move

I request deletion so that omiai can be moved here. 見合い (not お見合い) is the form used in all Japanese dictionaries. Further, "miai" (not omiai) is the primary form found in the OED and used consistently throughout the Wikipedia article. Bueller 007 (talk) 20:11, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Onegai shimasu

The part saying that Japanese parents imply their desire for an omiai by simply dropping the phrase "onegai shimasu" seems completely off to me; it just means "please", and I hear it dozens of times every day. I'm certainly available, but I don't think that many people are trying to hook me up with their daughters.

The reference is a book published in 1984. Can we get a more modern reference on this? There are some people I need to talk to again if that's all there is to it. 180.1.71.148 (talk) 23:14, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

It is all a matter of context. If you ask your friend if they would like another beer and they say "onegai shimasu", then they are just accepting your offer for a beer. But in the context of two mothers talking about their unmarried children, then one of them saying "onegai shimasu" might take on an entire different meaning. Of course, in these more modern times it would be more often said as a joke between the two friends than a serious suggestion that their kids get married. But as I do not have access to the two sources, I won't change anything in the particle for now. The main problem I see at the moment is the use of the word "often".
