Daily Mail Columnist?[edit]

Is this Michael Burleigh also the columnist for the Daily Mail? tharsaile (talk) 16:45, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gray Quote[edit]

This statement of John Gray's -- quoted in order to criticize Michael Burleigh -- is surely incorrect? :-

"... there is nothing peculiarly Islamic about suicide bombing, which was first developed by the Tamil Tigers..."

The Tamil Tigers first used suicide bombing in 1987 -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallipuram_Vasanthan . It had already been used several years earlier by Shi'ite Muslim groups in the Lebanon. A number of suicide bombings occurred in the latter country in the period 1981-1983, and they appear to have been the first such in modern times -- see, for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beirut_barracks_bombing . So it is highly likely that the Tamil Tigers, beginning in 1987, _copied_ those tactics. Davidpringle (talk) 18:43, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was under the impression that the Viet Cong also used this horrid tactic in the Vietnam war.

The quote was very long, and seemingly incorrect so have removed it.

Have you forgotten Japanese suicide bombing in 1945? Keith-264 (talk) 19:07, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just updated the "selected works" section with his latest book. "Day of the Assassins: A History of Political Assassination." I'm not sure why there are 4 ISBNs so I put them all in. Hope this is okay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adinov (talkcontribs) 04:38, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
