This guy is notable, for being a politician and a columnist in Australia's national newspaper.

Latham criticisms[edit]

The article mentions that Costello was critical of Mark Latham. Seems this went both ways:

John Faulkner—Emerged as the head of the travelling party, pulling the show together after an untidy opening week. He brought in Smith to oversee the advancin. John was my linkman back to campaign headquarters. He spoke a lot about the shortcomings of the 2001 campaign: Beazley gave up with two days to go, and failed to finish off strongly on radio, something we avoided this time. He also gave a hilarious critique of Michael Costello's role: 'He spent the whole campaign on the toilet. We were in the car one time and he kept on saying, "I'm not going to make it, I'm not going to make it." I don't know what was wrong, but in the end we all had the shits with him.'
Michael Costello—For a bloke with a lot to say about political strategy, he didn't sound too flash in the field. Simon Banks reckons that he would often fall asleep in meetings. When Beazley visited a hospital one day, they found the Chief of Staff asleep in one of the spare beds—I kid you not. Gartrell reckons that by the end of the 2001 campaign, Costello had racked up a noticeably big bill for in-house hotel movies. Obviously his great passion in life: the one thing that keeps him awake and off the dunny.
