Revert non encyclopedic language?

Thoughts on reverting back to 67.70.118.99's 2005-01-01t21:10z edit? Compare the flowery language changes made to 67's version. — Jeandré, 2005-01-05t18:34z

Rourke and Roach

Does Roach have a pronunciation that is in anyway similar to Rourke or is this just sports linkage trivia?

Mickey Rourke's birthplace

IMDb states that Rourke was born in Liberty City, FL which is not the same as this entry in Wikipedia. Perhaps this should be cleared up since it is the opening sentence http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000620/

IMDB also says "Date of Birth 16 September 1956, Schenectady, New York, USA" right at the top. It seems they're contradicting their own information. Enigma msg 16:29, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Year of Birth

It says at the top he was born in 1952, but he's listed as a 1956 birth. Which is correct? -98.221.133.96 (talk) 09:41, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I believe the 1952 or 1953 date is correct. His younger brother Joey who passed away in 2004 he and I were close friends and the same age. We were born in 1954, so Mickey being older would have been born in 1952/53. Jeff G (talk) 15:52, 17 September 2008 (UTC) Mickey was born in September 1952, Joey was born June 25, 1954. Joey passed away October 16,2004, after a lifelong battle with Lymphoma.

Hi Jeff. You know the Rourkes family, so I have question for you. Here is an article in which his stepfather says that Mickey make up everything about his life. Im curious whether its true? Reffering to age - its true because he recently told how old is he in some interview. Certainly hes much older than 52 because Andy Garcia is 52 and Mickey was his little league coach... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.151.115.9 (talk) 23:18, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Early Life

Mickey as well as his brothers and sisters did live in Miami prior to his JR. and Sr. High years. His mother married a Miami Beach Vice Detective Gene Addis and moved to Miami Beach prior to Jr. High School. He was a member of the Northwest Boys Club in his pre teen years. The area became a mixed race area in the 1960's and eventually became a African American community. He did not live in Liberty City itself, a loosely defined area not an actual city, but close by. It was a blue collar area even in the early 1960's. Jeff G (talk) 16:01, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

christophe rocancourt

Shouldnt there be a section dedicated to his involvement and friendship to super con-man Chritophe Rocancourt. It is an important area of his life from his so´called "lost years" , as he refers to them himself. And also one of few episodes that gained him worldwide media attention during that period... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Rocancourt

Get rid of "alongside" and insert the simple "with" instead.

The writer uses "alongside", a clumsy word at best, when discussing Mr. Rourke's roles with other actors. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.15.154.241 (talk) 17:39, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

It was called Barfly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Elohim (talkcontribs) 15:29, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

But he has right there are some movies he made in 70s and are not anywhere mentioned. E.g. “Love In The Hamptons” (1976) source: http://www.indiewire.com/article/2009/02/10/tom_folino_on_mickey_rourke_a_quiet_brilliance/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.151.115.9 (talk) 11:52, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Caps lock aside, the anon is mostly right. Barfly was one of the best films of 1987, but was never recognized as such because most Americans had never heard of Charles Bukowski, and still don't know who he is until this day. Bukowski was a genius in that he could take something incredibly dirty, crass, and just plain ugly, and turn it into something beautiful and even bring a tear to the most hardened heart. This is not easy to do as a writer, and harder still as an actor, but Rourke played the part well and deserves some kind of recognition for his efforts. The fact is, most people go to films to be entertained and forget their problems; They don't want to try and identify with the problems of an alcoholic writer, so this isn't what you would call a chick flick or a romantic comedy. But Palahniuk's Fight Club did pickup where Bukowski left off, a decade later, so Rourke was simply in the right place at the wrong time. Given these things, the current article should discuss more about Barfly, Rourke's experience as an actor in that project, and its effect on his career. Viriditas (talk) 13:12, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Addendum: And just to prove an eternal point about how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has always been out of touch, take a look at the page on the 60th Academy Awards for films released in 1987. Nobody remembers any of those films, but people are still talking about Barfly in 2009. This is how you know it is true art, because art is never recognized in its own time, and the Academy (in both senses of the term) are the last group of people on the planet who can tell shit from shinola. Viriditas (talk) 13:36, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Really, no one's talking about Wall Street? How about "greed is good"? And Moonstruck launched Nic Cage, clearly he's done nothing since. No, wait he has the number 1 film this week. As a side note this has nothing to do with improving the article, so let's put a stop to the forum-like discussions. Darrenhusted (talk) 15:57, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
On the contrary, I've neatly encapsulated three key areas for improvement above, and look forward to writing more about tinsel town's tumultuous relationship with Rourke and seeing the article expanded to discuss these topics. From what I can tell, you just launched into an off-topic defense of two films and one actor that have nothing to do with this article. As I pointed out above, Barfly was a critical hit but the public and the Academy didn't get it. This is a common theme in art. Since there are a plethora of sources that can be used to expand this subject here, this discussion concerns the need for further research. Viriditas (talk) 00:10, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Dogs: Beau Jack, not "Lowjack"

I did some checking and "Lowjack" is pretty clearly a transcription error of the Barbara Walters interview, but we're probably stuck with it. Substituting Beau Jack in the quote without explanation might be okay - what do you think? The dog's real name definitely was Beau Jack, confirmed by many sources, at least one of which specifically identifies him as the dog in the Walters anecdote. The article now has significant detail on Rourke's dogs, but the length is appropriate because of

  • their life-saving role
  • their own notoriety - Chocolate has a book written about him, Loki used to walk the red carpet and do interviews with Rourke
  • as a partial explanation for Rourke's activism with PETA and the pet shop protest
  • as the highly public central interest of his life
  • as the encyclopedia-worthy substitute for the human offspring he apparently does not have.

LisaSmall T/C 09:00, 18 February 2009 (UTC) We should add Loki is the daughter of Mickey’s first chihuahua, Beau Jack. source: http://scandalist.thefablife.com/2009-02-18/flashback-lunch-remembering-loki/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Miltina (talkcontribs) 02:13, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Boxing payoffs

I removed the following comment from the boxing section:

However his boxing career and boxing ability is in doubt with the rumored payoffs to the losers of his bouts. .

It looked tacked on, and there's no citation. If someone wants to verify and cite, feel free to put it back. Looks suspicious to me. his opponents were paid to lose, thats a fact and known in the boxing world. I personally know an opponent who was approached for a fixing bout. Filmography

The filmography is still not added or directly linked to this article and is all messed up. The "Francesco" link in the Filmography section does not lead to an article of that subject, but to the disambiguation for Francesco, which does not include such film. Therefore it should be marked red or an article on Francesco film should be started. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.240.220.9 (talk) 06:42, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
