Service status[edit]

Since 2004 there are great many discussion on the net about errors come across by users when they try to connect to the MSN Messenger. Part of these are caused by faults in user network setting and others, it is said, caused by the pause of .NET Messenger Service.

I have been using MSN for a long time. Until recently I encountered such problem. I tried to check the .NET Messenger Service status whenever I cannot logon to the MSN, but every time I try, I receive a "No page to display" error.

Can anyone tell me under normal condition what the status page should look like?

Can you provide a link to that page? Maybe your client has an outdated (broken) link. I saw many wrong links in the help topics of windows live messenger (pointing to help.live.com, but talking about something else) --216.244.213.251 20:13, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meetro (Multi-platform, GPL & Proprietary)[edit]

I read that while editing the third-party clients section. It's weird. I couldn't find anything about the license, so I commented out the "gpl" part. Anyone knows why it was there? --216.244.232.6 20:08, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics[edit]

Does any else find it interesting and perhaps relevant to the article to notice the major Canadian demographic of MSN? Similar to how many netizens from the US use AIM in the same way. 24.82.167.240 00:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Messenger Logo.png[edit]

Image:Messenger Logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Closing...[edit]

Apparently the service is finally closed. I can't connect (location: Slovenia) and others report it is closed in Germany (http://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2013-July/026981.html see end of message) --Xerces8 (talk) 09:16, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As of october 13, 2014 I'm still connected (from Norway) to the MSN service using the Pidgin client, and I still see other contacts on it. So it's not closed down just yet. Solbu (talk) 08:24, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And now I can't connect either. I've been unable to connect for at least 2 weeks. Solbu (talk) 14:20, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have an e-mail dated 11 January 2013 it says: We are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.
Another late one dated 17 February 2013 says: Starting April 8th, we will begin upgrading customers from Messenger to Skype. The process will take a few weeks to complete. April 8th is the first day you may be required to upgrade. This is a bit later than the March 15th date we previously mentioned to some of you as we wanted to give you more time to make the transition. To keep chatting with your Messenger contacts, simply upgrade to the latest version of Skype using the instructions below and sign in using a Microsoft account (this is the same ID you use to sign into Messenger). Once signed in, your contacts will already be there. You'll be able to instant message and make video calls with them just like before, and start discovering new ways of staying in touch, including Skype on your mobile or tablet.
