Cause of the Laramide orogeny[edit]

The cause of the Laramide orogeny being shallow subduction of the Farallon plate is disputed. Increasingly, collision of a large archipelago or "ribbon continent," with subsequent northward translation, is being advanced by N. American cordillera geologists as the cause of the Laramide and Sevier orogenies.
