Moving permanently from Monterey Institute of International Studies page to Middlebury Institute of International Studies page[edit]

The Institute has been operating under the name "Middlebury Institute of International Studies" for nearly a year now. This is how it is currently referred to across most sources. A Google News search produces thousands of results, from the local Monterey County Herald to the Washington Post. Even when doing a Google News search of "Monterey Institute of International Studies", most of the results that come up actually use the name "Middlebury Institute". The title of this article needs to be changed to reflect the Institute's official name and how it is currently being referred to in regular usage.Mross715 (talk) 18:12, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 7 January 2015[edit]

There was not enough support to move the article at this time. Per WP:COMMONNAME, before we move the article, we need evidence that reliable sources writing about the institute are primarily using the new name. There is a good argument in saying that it's implausible that sources will continue to use the current name (an invocation of WP:IAR, and one that I am sympathetic to), but that would require clear consensus. I considered closing this as an IAR move anyways, on the basis that a couple of weeks have passed since the opposing editors commented, but a cursory search of Google News shows that a significant number of sources are in fact still using the old name. This issue can be revisited in the coming months as the evidence develops. Likely a couple of sets of search results or a few good news articles would be sufficient. In the meantime, note that Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey has already been created as a cut-and-paste move, so this should probably be addressed. Oppose for now. @Andrewa: makes the correct point that the article name shouldn't automatically be the official name, but equally the official name is always a contender. Mild support. In my experience, the actual WP:COMMONNAME would be "Monterey Institute"; the only reason anybody calls it "the Monterey Institute of International Studies" is because that's the official name, and it doesn't seem plausible that very many people are going to keep calling it that now that it's no longer the official name. Although I respect the general principle, and especially the need to keep institutions from treating Wikipedia as just another part of their web presence, in this case it seems a trifle silly to stand on ceremony. -- Visviva (talk) 17:59, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Support. I would like to second the previous request to rename and move the page. According to Wikipedia, "Generally, article titles are based on what the subject is called in reliable sources"^[1]. Since the name change on 7 January 2015, MIIS has been referred to as the Middlebury Institute of International Studies on directories such as Yelp, Google, etc, and the new name was reported in local press^[2]. Referring to Wikipedia's guidelines for a good article title: the school is currently more recognizable as the former name. However, as new students research MIIS, they will know it as its new and current name. It is for this reason that I propose renaming the article but placing a redirector that maintains the old name but redirects to an updated article. In terms of naturalness, this wikipedia article is most useful to potential students. As MIIS is promoting itself to potential students under its new name, not its old one, it is most natural for potential students to search for the Middlebury Institute rather than the Monterey Institute. Currently, when one searches for the Middlebury Institute, there is no article, which is confusing to those performing research. The new title is sufficiently precise and concise. Most online directories have already recognized the new name, and future news articles will likely make use of the new name, as there is no utility in using an old name. For that reason, it will be best for the article name to be changed in order to keep it consistent. Users @Andrewa: and @Amakuru: that previously opposed the article name change did not give any reason why it should not be changed. When considering consistency, the official name, and usefulness, it is clearly in both the school's and Wikipedia's best interest to change the name to its current one, rather than allowing the article title to be a reference to an outdated name.Jsbmhca 717 (talk) 18:25, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
