Image of official seal?

What's the deal with the image of the seal in the infobox? It looks like the image doesn't scale down to thumbnail size, and so we have a barely-visible purple circle. Does anyone have a better image of the seal? I can't seem to find one.-Nicktalk 22:12, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Never mind. I downloaded the image, and used photoshop to clean it up and sharpen it (and save as a different format). It seems to be better now. -Nicktalk 22:20, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Requested move

There is currently a proposal on the table to amend the Wikipedia naming conventions for US cities to follow the AP Stylebook's suggested names. This would effectively move a number of US city articles currently on the list, so Milwaukee, Wisconsin would be moved to Milwaukee. On the addtion of "panorama map"

A "panorama map of Milwaukee" [sic] was recently added to the article. While appreciative of the efforts, I feel it should be removed since the image: (a) doesn't actually provide a panoramic map of the city, (b) is mostly composed of greenspace, with the cityscape only in the background, (c) and fails to present any clear landmarks to make the image distinctively "of Milwaukee". As such, it has little encyclopedic or informative value. --ZimZalaBim talk 19:42, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I'd have to agree. Aside from the above points, the lighting in the photo makes it difficult to see what's actually being depicted. And, there are some missing buildings that would suggest that the pic is outdated. -Nicktalk 20:17, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmong Community in Milwaukee

Among immigration and migration to Milwaukee there needs to be a greater effort to include the other more recent ethnic groups that have moved to and contributed to Milwuakee. This would include an expansion on the city's black and Latino communities. There also must be some mention of the city's Hmong Community as it is the 3rd Largest in the nation, behind Minneapolis and Fresno.

City of Festivals

Most town and city entries have this sort of category.

Population claims

This is written in Milwaukee's article:

"With the large influx of immigrants, Milwaukee became one of the 15 largest cities in the nation, and by the mid-1960s, its population reached nearly 850,000. Starting in the late 1960s, unlike many cities in the "rust belt", Milwaukee's population continued to increase. Milwaukee escaped white flight, while every other major city experienced a decrease in population because of it."

According to provided census data, Milwaukee never reached 850,000 people, nor did it escape the population decreases that hit many other Northeastern and Midwestern cities from the 1960s onward. The origins of the name "Milwaukee."

Yes, I came here to note this as well. The first paragraph of the History section, which offers two possibilities regarding the origin of the name, conflicts with the opening of the article. The History of Milwaukee article lends credence to the Algonquin origin but also makes it clear that the origin is uncertain. Structure

Hi. I'm going through all the US Cities (as per List of United States cities by population) in an effort to provide some uniformity in structure. Anyone have an issue with me restructuring this article as per Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline. I won't be changing any content, merely the order. Occasionally, I will also move a picture just to clean up spacing issues. I've already gone through the top 20 or so on the above list, if you'd like to see how they turned out. Thoughts? Hoocąk name for Milwaukee

The Hoocąk word for Milwaukee, Teešíšik ('eeja), was recently removed from the lead. With some further explanation as to meaning, it might find a place in the article body, with other native names. It would need historical context and better references. Hocąk Teaching Materials, Volume 1 is just a language dictionary and that citation gives no historical context. FWIW, "Tee" appears to mean "lake" and "šíšik" appears to mean "ugly".[1] That doesn't seem to relate to the naming of Milwaukee or a historical Winnebago settlement there as described in History of Milwaukee as "Good", "Beautiful" and "Pleasant Land" or gathering place by the water. The source would have to clarify if it was a pre-founding of Milwaukee historical place name used c.1800 or if the term was created as a translation to refer to Milwaukee in more modern times. --Dual Freq (talk) 14:50, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Religion

I updated the survey in the religion section to be about a 2010 survey instead of a 2000 survey. To write this section, I did simple calculations (addition and dividing by 10 to go from adherence rate to percentage). By Wikipedia policy, simple calculations are not original research. Segregation update

I noticed that the paragraph describing segregation in Milwaukee cites several articles over 10 years old, with only reference from the past 5 years (2011). Is there some way we could update this to reflect more recent reports? Kqzhong (talk) 00:24, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

This article from 2014 states that Milwaukee is "the most segregated city in the country in terms of race and poverty." Unclear use of "Mexican American" in article

There is a sentence in the 3rd to last paragraph of section "Milwaukee since European settlement" that states - "By 1925, around 9,000 Mexican Americans lived in Milwaukee, but the Great Depression forced many of them to move back home." Would this sentence make more sense if it used Mexican Nationals since 'back home' for them would be Mexico as opposed to Mexican Americans whose home would have been Milwaukee? Cheers! That sentence was taken straight from the source cited at the end of the paragraph. The preceding sentences at the source make it clear that these were migrant laborers and implies that their "home" was Mexico, but doesn't actually say what their nationality was. dark photos

I see what you mean, but I'd let it be. Perhaps it's because I know Milwaukee so well that I'm more likely to enjoy photos in dramatic light, where someone else might prefer photographs shot in the middle of the day, which might be more clear, informative, and thus encyclopedic. However, the photos are well-focused, and detail is better seen when they're viewed at hi-res. In other words, they're sufficient as index photos, the caption also linking to articles where more photos might be found. Dhtwiki (talk) 06:19, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I'd have to agree that the photos look too dark. I don't think they're dramatic; in fact, I think several of them are just poor shots and accordingly, poor choices for Wikipedia--especially in the infobox collage. Every time I visit the article I cringe a little at how weak this visual is. The skyline at sunset makes it hard to discern what is what, even in the large version. Marquette Hall is almost absurdly dark as a thumbnail and must be enlarged to see any detail whatsoever (which even then is unclear). And the sun/shadow interplay on the library just looks a bit odd. The shots don't all have to be daytime shots; the one of City Hall at night isn't terrible, necessarily. But compare against the infobox collages in the articles for Cleveland, Chicago, or Albuquerque. I think we can come up with something better. If I were a user who was entirely unfamiliar with the city, I wouldn't feel like the Milwaukee collage gives a quick, clear, effortless first impression. Can anyone recommend a good tool for assembling such a collage? I'm tempted to find some images in the Commons and make something new. Wantonlife (talk) 04:00, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

I think it's an improvement but there are so many better photos of downtown Milwaukee available. I have some I have shot myself. I can put them in Creative Commons and make a collage if that's ok with you. The photos of the city should look great, not just mediocre.

Also, the skyline is rapidly changing and these photos are out of date. Two new towers are currently being constructed by Northwestern Mutual that are dramatically altering the skyline; The 833 E Michigan building was just recently erected; the high rise Couture will start construction in a couple of months just east of that; and there are rumours of a 52 story headquarters tower to be built by Johnson Controls in the near future, as well. I made a new collage that includes the recently completed NML tower, along with some other photos that are a bit brighter compared to the last image someone else uploaded. Hopefully I created the collage correctly for the Commons this time. All six of the images used in it are linked in the description for the collage file and all are already part of the Commons.
