Introduction[edit]

Added iron to list of metals. I'll try and get a good picture of an example this weekend.Idsfa 04:49, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Method[edit]

3-12 HOURS at heat? I normally give it 30 minutes about 20 degrees under melting point.Mzmadmike 05:45, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

External Links[edit]

I reverted the anonymous edit adding a link to a jewelry web site which does not even specialize exclusively in Mokume-gane. It added no new content to the article, and was only acting as advertising for one of the many jewelers doing this work.Idsfa 18:38, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just deleted the entire section. Not a single link went to a site about the topic of Mokume-gane, they were all web sites of people selling examples of mokume-gane jewelry. That's perfectly fine, but doesn't belong in an encyclopedia. Idsfa 05:27, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edits[edit]

I removed the how-to because it was teaching material and did not belong in an encyclopedia —Preceding unsigned comment added by LinuxTheKid (talkcontribs) 04:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Translation[edit]

The article says mokume-gane literally translates as wood eye metal, where wood eye refers to burls. This is not quite correct. Mokume can be broken down to wood and eye kanji, but the word itself means wood-grain. (The "literal translation" from individual kanji is nonsense; it would be like "literally translating" English based on sections of words, eg "alphabet" literally translating into "first gamble".) It also is not limited specifically to burls. The transliteration should be "wood-grain metal" ("metal wood-grain" would be even closer to the proper meaning, but would be less literal).
